- Elroy A. McAlexander
Mayetta - Elroy A. McAlexander, 81, Mayetta, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Sabetha Community Hospital.
Mr. McAlexander was born Oct. 29, 1917, at Mayetta and was a longtime resident. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He operated the blacksmith shop in Mayetta for 10 years and was a maintenance engineer at the Boys Industrial School, Topeka. He was later promoted to plant supervisor, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Mayetta Christian Church, where he was a superintendent, a Sunday School teacher, a board member and elder. He served on the Mayetta ad Royal Valley school boards for 26 years. He established the Mayetta Volunteer Fire Department in 1951 and was active for more than 40 years.
He served as mayor and on the Mayetta City Council. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 393, Mayetta, and was sexton of the Mayetta Cemetery for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Vietta of the home; two sons, Skip McAlexander of Salina and Kal McAlexander of New Orleans; a daughter, Joyce Cochren of Holton; two sisters, Eunice Vaught of Meriden and Corky Eigenman of Mayetta; two brothers, Freemont of Osage City and Kent of Kirksville, Mo; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home, Fourth& Montana, Holton 66436. Burial will be in Mayetta Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Mayetta Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
