The Seventeenth Annual Hedges Reunion was held Sunday, August 18, 1946 at Lincoln Park, Danville, Illinois with 99 relatives and friends present. A basket dinner was served at the noon hour. George F. Hedges presided at the business meeting in the afternoon. Talks were given from those from distances and was enjoyed by all. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year. President J. W. Hedges, Vice President P. T. Hedges, Secretary Treasurer Anna Bagley. The next meeting will be held the 3rd Sunday in August 1947 in Missouri. Gifts were presented to the oldest man present, George F. Hedges, 79. Oldest woman was Mrs. Cora Hedges, 76 years old. The youngest was Robert Alan Yeazel, 3 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Yeazel. Newlyweds were Mr. and Mrs. John Hanks. The one coming the farthest was Jasper N. Hedges of Dubois, Wyoming, 1650 miles. There were 6 marriages, Betty Buckman and Dale Wood, Geraldine Hedges and Frank Pesorara, Betty Lou Smith and Frank Day, Lois Smith and Max Dodd, Roy Hedges and Inez Cola, Irene Smith and John Hanks. Lois Maxine Dodd, 95, of Danville passed away early Monday morning Mary 27, 2017 at The Waters of Covington.
Lois was born January 4, 1922, in Homer, IL, the daughter of Leonard and Daisy (Easton) Smith. She married Kenneth Dodd on April 14, 1946. He preceded her in death in 2008.
Surviving Lois is her son, Gary (Mary Ann) Dodd and two daughters, Brenda Shanks and Julie (Steve) Myers and seven grandchildren Jason Shanks, Tara (Alan) Hackerd, Tony (Christy) Dodd, David Dodd, Joseph Dodd, Maria (Dan) Thornton, and Jordyn Shanks and seven great grandchildren.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and one sister Irene Hanks.
Lois graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1942. After graduation, Lois enlisted in the United States Army. She did her basic training in Wisconsin. After completion, she served in the US Army 101st Nurses Corp. She served in England in charge of over 100 amputees.
She also served in France and Germany. After returning to the states, she married Kenneth Dodd and they both attended Varner Beauty School in Paris, IL. They had their own Beauty Shop in Danville, IL. After a period of time, they decided to start a family therefore closing the shop. She continued her nursing career as a school nurse for Fairchild School in Danville and in 1974 went to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville, IL retiring in 1978.
Lois was a member of Second Church of Christ, Danville, IL. She enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with her family.
A celebration of Lois’s life will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3490 N. Vermillion, Danville, IL, on Thursday, March 30th at 3pm with visitation one hour prior to the service. Drew Mentzer will officiate with entombment at a later date at Sunset Memorial Park.
