Records indicate that Catherine married three times.
Her first marriage was to John Shumard in about 1857. They had four children who appear in census records: Susan born about 1858; son Thomas born about 1851; William born about 1853 and Margaret born about 1854. In the 1870 census husband John and daughter Susan are no longer part of the household. Records suggest that daughter Susan died. And records indicated that John and Catherine had divorced before 1870. He married a second time and had a second family.
Catherine [Shumard] married a second time on 27 Oct 1879 to William Matthews in Sullivan County, Missouri. In the 1880 census, Catherine is listed as Catharine Shumart, widowed, with her three children living with her. I can find no other records on William Matthews.
Catherine [Mathews] married a third time on 24 May 1888 to Peter Thompson Cassity in Sullivan County, Missouri.
