James Alva "Jim" Hedges was born in 1865 and married Lucy Amanda Cox in 1885. They moved to Jamaica, Ill., to this union six children were born of which three survived: Anna Maude, born June 3, 1889 married Orra Smith and they were the parents of 10 children, all born in or near Purdin except J. W., he was born in Texas when his parents lived there for one year. The rest of the children: Glenn, Travis, Norman, Ruth, Lucille, Francis, John, Essie Mae and George were all born in or near Purdin. George died in the Korean War; Essie Lavina married Athes Creason, they lived on a farm west of Purdin several years before retiring in Purdin. Athes still maintains his home there; W. M. born Nov. 20, 1896, married Mary Christy and they were the parents of three children, Vernon (deceased), Wilma Jean (deceased) and Duane. Duane lives in California with his wife, Daria and 3 children. Jim's wife Lucy, passes away in Jan. 1919 at the age of 52, she is buried in the Purdin Cemetery. He later married Fannie McGhee and lived at the old "Mill House" in Purdin for several years. He died in Aug. 1945, he was an Elder in the Church of Christ and his father was a preacher.

- MHR note: William Gilkison (Catlin, IL) said "Jim" used to talk in his sleep and once he sang "Joyfully, joyfully will I go home". His wife said the next morning "This is the durndest family I ever saw!"

- MHR note: information from Essie. Jim and Lucy left Jamaica, Illinois (near Danville) February 1897 and went to Missouri, settling 1.5 miles east of Purdin. Then moved to south of Linneus and after about a year moved back to about one mile east of Purdin and stayed until September 1906 when they went to 3/5 miles east of Electra, Texas (near Vernon and Wichita Falls). In 1909 they moved back to Purdin and lived in town but spring, 1910, they moved to one mile west of Purdin. In 1912 they moved back into Purdin and lived until 1917 when they went to Brookfield, Missouri and lived a few months, but returned to the place west of Purdin and remained nearly a year.
In February 1918, their daughter Essie moved onto her parent's place at Brookfield, but returned to her parents place at West of Purdin, January 1919 (as Jim moved out). And "Maude" moved onto the 200 acres place near Brookfield.
Upon the death of his first wife, Jim lived around with his children until his second marriage. He and Fannie lived on her property at Linneus, MO, for more than a year, when they moved to Purdin. After Fannie's death, Jim lived on in their house until about four months before his own death. He had a stroke and was helpless and lived with Maude until his death.

- Mrs. Lucy Jenkins had the misfortune to get her arm broke and James Hedges and wife received several bruises when Mr. Hedges’ car turned over at Bucklin as they were returning from Illinois where they had been visiting relatives and friends.

Purdin Enterprise
Monday a deal was completed making Orra Smith owner of James Hedges 200 acre farm near Brookfield, Mr. Hedges taking Mr. Smith’s farm laying west of town in on the deal. Mr. Hedges sold his forty acres where he now lives to Atheas Creason and will move to his old farm vacated by Mr. Smith. They will make the change during the next few weeks the weather remaining favorable.

- Jas A. Hedges
James Alva Hedges, a well known and highly respected citizen of Purdin, passed away Tuesday August 5, at the home of his daughter Mrs. O.N. Smith in Purdin, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 26 days.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O.N. Smith and Mrs. W.A. Creason, both of Purdin, and one son, Wm. M. Hedges of Ottumwa, Iowa; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, four brothers, G.F. Hedges, Fairmount, Iowa; P.T. Hedges of Matchitoches, La.; J.W. Hedges of Purdin, and J.N. Hedges of Riverside, Wyo.; two sisters Mrs. Anna Bagley of Purdin and Mrs. Mary Wood of Rockport, Texas. – Leader Record.
Funeral services are being held this (Thursday) afternoon at the Church of Christ in Purdin, conducted by R.C. Yadon. Interment will take place at the Purdin cemetery under the direction of the Wade Funeral Service.

James Alva Hedges was one of first seven deacons elected when Center Point Church was officially founded on 14 February 1891: Harvey Elliott, Edward Ellis, A.W. Shelby, Lee Cronkhite, James A. Hedges Jr., Herbert Stearns, and ___ Dimick.
James' uncle James Alva Hedges was one of the first five elders. He was also a cousin of Lee Cronkhite (husband of Ida May Hedges) and Edward Ellis (husband of Serona Hedges), two of the other first seven deacons.
