Notes - Mr. John Hayes, was born in the state of Indiana, August 15, 1835. When about five years of age, with her parents, he emigrated westward, settling in Iowa, where they remained until 1857, when the family came to Missouri, settling upon the farm on which his death occurred Saturday, May 31. In 1859 Mr. Hayes was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Casida and to this union were born five children, Jim, Tom, George, Mrs. J.W. Sallee and Mrs. J.D. Molloy, who with their mother survive. When the days of the rebellion came on he became a soldier and served under the stars and stripes for three years, being honorably discharged at the end of the war. In the passing of Mr. Hayes this community has lost one of its very earliest settlers – one who has witnessed this wild timber and prairie country blossom under the cultivation of the emigrant.
Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Olive, Sunday afternoon by Rev. J.W. Drinkard. Members of the Antioch Christian church of which deceased had been a member for many years, assisted with the music and the body was interred in the Mt. Olive cemetery.
The Daily News-Bulletin, Brookfield, Missouri. Tuesday, 10 June 1919.
LKH note: Elizabeth’s maiden name is misspelled in the obituary.
