John Bunyan Rice was the son of David and Susannah Rice. His siblings were Elizabeth,( married John Ringo), James Harvey (married to Margaret Belle Crutcher), Polly (married to Edward Kern), Mary Magdaline (married to unknown O'Neil), and David Luther (married to Elizabeth Johnston) Rice.
He married Amelia Ann Hoggins 17 Mar 1845, in Gallatin County, Ky. They lost a set of twins in 1864; John Hill and Robert Lee. Their remaining children were; Mary Jane, Ann Susan, Margaret, Angeline, David Luther, Judson, James Hill, William I, Lydia Belle, and Edwin Claude Rice.

Vevay, Ind. September 27. - John Buncen Rice, Aged near sixty, and a highly respected and well-to-do farmer of Southern Kentucky, who has for some time past been visiting his son in-law, Mr. John Sanders Lindsay, near Ghent, Ky., committed suicide this morning, by cutting his throat with a razor. Cause unknown.

- John Rice, from near Hickman, committed suicide near Ghent, Friday morning at about 5 o'clock, by cutting his throat with a razor. He was on a visit to his children at John Menses, about a mile from Ghent. As no cause for this act is known it is supposed that he was insane. His age was about 65 years.
