      Ninth Generation

      462. John Hunt (259) was born about 1735 in Baltimore/Harford Co., Maryland, USA. He died about 1808 in Fleming County, Kentucky, USA. Rev. War list-Capt. John Tipton's Roll has the name of John Hunt on it.

      Timeline-little proof of this.

1735-Family tradition says that John Hunt was born along the Gunpowder River in Baltimore/Harford Co. Md. Ruhama Shannon gives his birthdate as Aug. 13, 1730 St. Paul Parish, Baltimore Co. Md.. It is thought that he moved from Maryland to the vicinity of Overall Creek (Prince William Co.) in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia wherre he married Mary Overall in the 1750's. There were many Overalls in Prince William Co. records but I found no mention of Hunts.

The first child of John and Mary Hunt was Lewis Wilson who was born in Virginia around 1762. In 1881 Miles Hunt said his grandparents werre John Hunt and Mary Overall. There are records of John, William, and Joseph Hunt in Lunenburg Co. VA. in the 1750's.

According to family tradition John Hunt fought in the American Revolution. There is no proof that any or which one is our John Hunt. One served with Capt. Michael Raeder (Dunmore Co. Militia) who may have later been on the roll of John Tipton Oct 25, 1775. This is the one assumed to be our John Hunt.

1783-Shenandoah Co.VA-John Hunt was involved in several lawsuits in which he owed money to others. John Hunt, Jr., Reuben Hunt, and Basil Hunt were also mentioned.

1783-John Hunt is listed on Alexander Hite's tax list.

1787-After the Revolutionary War, John Tipton moved from Virginia to North Carolina and it is thought that John Hunt and his family moved also. The records of North Carolina mention a John Hunt and it is thought he is our ancestor. In 1784 North Carolina could not protect its western lands from Indian raids so it ceded the land back to the federal government. It later reversed its decisionn but, in the meantime, people living in that western area formed a separate state called Franklin. By December of 1787 John Hunt was in the Washington District of North Carolina (now Tennessee) where he, along with John Hunt, Jr. Basil and Reuben Hunt petitioned the General Assembly from the Western Country to set up the state of Franklin. Named after Benjamin Franklin, the state governed itself for four years but because of opposition from North Carolina it never became a formal state and in 1796 it became a part of Tennessee (documentation comes from the History of the lost state of Franklin by Samuel Williams, p. 339.

1791-John Hunt was now living in Bourbon Co. KY-August 4, 1791 deed from Mason Co. KY. Book A. p. 119 and 142-John Hunt Sr. of Bourbon Co. KY....Family tradition says the Hunts eventually left Tennessee because of a lack of salt. John Hunt was listed on the 1790 Bourbon Co. KY census. According to a lawsuit filed by his heirs in 1810, John Hunt purchased 1,000 acres in Bourbon Co. KY. This land was discovered to be a part of a tract of land covered by Wright's Military Survey. In disgust John Hunt then moved to Fleming Co. KY. His heirs were seeking to recover losses from this fraud.

By Feb. 27, 1793 he had married Esther, thought to be his second wife.

He was listed in the May court, 1799-Fleming Co. KY. In a newspaper article, dated
July 11, 1974, he was listed as being an original settler of Fleming Co.
1808-Fleming Co. KY. listed as deceased. Widow, Esther sues for dower lands in Bourbon Co. KY. May mean that they m. there in the 1790's and she wasn't the mother of his children.

      Miles Hunt, in 1881, says that his grandmother's name was Mary Overall. No proof of this. Denton family tradition says that John also was the father of Sarah (Sally) Hunt who m. Abraham Denton; Deborah Hunt who m. Benjamin Denton;
Mary (Polly) Hunt who m. William Denton.

Information from William Denton, a genealogy researcher, in 1969. "I've done a lot of research on John Hunt Sr. I can't prove if he is the same John Hunt that was in Shenandoah Co. VA. I couldn't find any trace of him in Washington Co. TN. I did find a John Hunt in Sullivan Co. TN. I think this is where the Hunts and Denton families met."

Harvey Faye, a Hunt researcher said that John Hunt married Mary Overall, daughter of John Overall of Prince William County, VA. (no documentation)

Miles Hunt says his grandfather was from England; this may be why there is no record of him in VA before 1783.

Shenandoah Co. VA order book, 1781-1784:

John Hunt's second wife was named Esther. Bourbon Co. KY deed book 1, p. 23; Aug. 14, 1812. Esther Hunt, widow of John Hunt, Sr. deceased of Fleming Co. KY to Thomas Jones, Jr. Signed Esther Hunt, by John Hunt Jr. Attorney in fact. Also see Bourbon Co. KY deed book 1, p. 270, June 19, 1813 to William Kelly. He was married to Mary Overall before 1762 in Virginia, USA.

      463. Mary Overall (259) was born about 1740 in Virginia, USA. She died before 1793. Children were:

      child231 i. Winiferd Hunt.

In the complaint of a Harrison Co., KY lawsuit brought by the heirs of John Hunt, Sr. against Thomas Jones, Jr. (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4X-KSJJ-9), the heirs are listed with the stipulation that they were the "whole and sole number of heirs" of John Hunt, Sr.” They only included: Reuben Hunt, Basil Hunt, Absalom Hunt, Winnefred Hunt Titsworth (wife of Benjamin Titsworth), Dardana [sic] Hunt Denton (wife of Joseph Denton). John Hunt, Jr. (Lewis Wilson Hunt was deceased at this time and would not have been listed.)

Mary Hunt (who married William Denton), Sarah Hunt (who married Abraham Denton), and Deborah Hunt (who married Isaac Hutson) are often mistakenly attached to John Hunt, Sr. From the "Hunt Family of Greenup County" (http://www.batteryl.org/hunt.html) about Sarah Hunt, "Thought to be possibly a niece of John Hunt, Sr along with Mary and Deborah. Made the journey to Bourbon CO in late 1790's from East Tenn Territory, Washington Co."

    • Note of Billie Hunt:

At this point in time, the parentage and origin of John Hunt, Sr. hasn't been sufficiently proven to my satisfaction, therefore, I won't speculate on those parts of his life, other than to say that his ancestors were definitely of English descent. Some records list our John Hunt, Sr.'s father as being John Hunt, descended from Joseph Hunt, whose father was another John Hunt. When checking English records I found there to be literally hundreds of John Hunts

and no distinction could be made that would link to our line. Rather than speculate for the sake of recording ancestry, I have relied on what has been proven through my research and that of many other HUNT researchers.

John Hunt (Sr.) Moved from Baltimore Co.,MD to Frederick Co.,VA in 1756.

In 1782 moved family to Watauga Settlement, Washington Co., TN.

In 1790 they moved to Bourbon Co., KY then to Fleming Co., KY.

John Hunt Sr. served as Army Chaplin in Virginia Militia and also served in the Revolutionary War, Virginia, 6th Army as Chaplin. He was a Baptist Minister and three of his sons became Methodist Ministers.! "We can be reasonably sure of our

facts back to John Hunt, Sr., but beyond him we are all floundering in the mists of time"

      Virginia Lee Hunt Underwood.11 Aug 1994.Also KZ33-NQ

Shenandoah County, Virginia tax list of 1783 lists the following:

      John Denton 10 whites
      John Hunt 7 whites
      John Overall 8 whites
      William Overall 8 whites
      William Tipton 8 whites
      John Tipton 10 whites

RECORDS of NORTH CAROLINA by: Clark Vol. 22, page 705

The inhabitants of the Western Country: We lament the unhappy dispute between us and our Brethern on the Eastern side of the mountains in respect to erecting a new government. In the Senate, December 1787, read and referred to Court on Public Bills. It was signed by about five hundred (500) inhabitants. Among those signers: John Hunt, Jr., Reuben Hunt, Jonathan Hunt, John Hunt, Sr., Basil Hunt and Lewis Hunt.

It appears that John Hunt, Sr. had bought land in Kentucky prior to 1791. The story is: Salt was scarce in Tennessee, so the family decided to move near the salt licks of Kentucky where they could distill and make salt from clay.

DEED BOOK A of Mason County, Kentucky page 131 13 December, 1791

John Hunt Sr. to: Basil Hunt of said county and state, for one-hundred (100) pounds of current money of Virginia, three-hundred (300) acres on main Licking River on both sides of river in the county of Bourbon and Mason, being part of seven-thousand (7000) acres survey that John Jacob Mires made together with houses, gardens, fences, woods, Underwood's, profits, commodities and other appurtenances.

      signed: John Hunt Sr.
      Witnessed By:
      William Burk
      Abraham Fitsworth
      John Linn

NOTE: Basil and Colonel John Tipton Hunt were still in Sullivan County, Tennessee 4 August,1791. Basil was in Bourbon/Mason counties by 13 December 1791. Jacob Mires, the man from whom the above land was purchased, was the builder of the famous Bourbon Iron Works/Slate Furnace, located on Hwy. 36, just South of present day Owingsville. It began operation in 1791, just one year before Kentucky became a state and continued operation until the 1870's

John Hunt Sr. settled first in Bourbon County, Kentucky, but due to an error, he found he was settled on land that was a part of a Military Survey for a Mr. Wright. In disgust, he moved to Fleming County, Kentucky, sometime before 1799. On 30 October 1810, John Hunt's heirs filed a suit against Thomas Jones Jr., in Bourbon County Circuit Court for recovery of land or money paid for it. The heirs would show their ancestor, John Hunt Sr., did on 1 March 1791 purchase of William Lee, a pre-emption of one-thousand (1000) acres in Bourbon County. Their ancestor discovered that part of that tract was covered by Wright's Military Survey; that parts were sold to divers persons, and leaving that part interfering with said Military Survey; that John Hunt Sr. moved to Fleming County; that a certain Thomas Jones Jr., surveyor, discovered that the balance of Lee's pre-emption did not interfere with Wright's tracts; that the old man, John Hunt Sr., died about 1807 without leaving a will, leaving orators and also another son, John Hunt Jr., who refuses to report the right of his ancestor, and who released his claim to said Thomas Jones Jr., by release dated September 1809; that since the death of John Hunt Sr., not more than three years ago, they discovered the fraud practiced on their ancestor Orators: Reuben hunt, William Basil Hunt, Absolom Hunt, Benjamin Fitsworth and wife, Winny, Joseph Denton and wife, Dradenna.

The above document is located in drawer 286 in the Bourbon County Courthouse.

Considering the orators listed and John Hunt Jr., it would leave it to reason that Mary, Sarah and Deborah WERE NOT daughters of John Hunt Sr., but may have been nieces.
