      Joseph Early
Joseph Early Hedges of Blacksburg, Va., passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016, after a well-lived life of 91 years. Joe spent his childhood in Alderson, W.Va. As an adult, he lived in Bluefield and Blacksburg. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1949, Joe pursued successful and productive careers with E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company and the Boxley Corporation. After retirement, he owned and operated Precision Eyewear, in Blacksburg.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son, Dr. David Hedges and wife, Toni of Blacksburg; his son, Steve Hedges and wife, Anne of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Kate Lang, Elizabeth Bays, Sarah Hedges, Douglas Hedges and Rachel Hedges; and great-grandsons, Ethan Bays and Parker Lang. He is predeceased by his first wife, Dot.
Joe’s life revolved around his love for and commitment to his family, with whom he shared his life-long curiosity for and enchantment with the beauty and wonder of forests, fields and streams, and the cleverness, ingenuity and art of man. Joe will be remembered by many as a trusted, constant friend; one who offered comfort and advice, and always with an outrageous witty sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held at Blacksburg Christian Fellowship Church, 2300 North Main Street, Blacksburg, Va. 24060, on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at 1 p.m. For those that desire to make a memorial contribution, the family suggests that gifts may be made in Joe’s name to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, 3rd Floor, Santa Monica Ca. 90401, www.pcf.org, or Blacksburg Christian Fellowship Church. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
