Deloris Essie Hedges
(January 18, 1941 - August 19, 2012)
Deloris Essie Johnston Hedges passed peacefully from this life, with her family at her side, on August 19, 2012 at the age of 71. Deloris was the youngest daughter of Loyd and Essie (Olds) Johnston. She was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma on January 18, 1941. Deloris was affectionately known as “Buddy” to her sister and brothers.
Deloris grew up on the Jeffery Ranch near Vici, Oklahoma where she attended the elementary and high school, graduating with the Class of 1959. She was Salutatorian of her class.
Deloris was united in marriage to Orne Thompson on June 9, 1958 in Woodward, Oklahoma. They lovingly added four children to their family; Sandra Ann, Randall Loyd, Joan Renee and Jimmie Dewayne. They made their home for a time in Amarillo, Texas, Woodward, Oklahoma and Buffalo, Oklahoma before returning to Vici. Deloris was a devoted and loving mother.
Deloris and Roy Aytes were married on September 27, 1977. Roy worked on the pipeline so the couple lived in many places in the western half of the United States as they followed the pipeline construction. She met many people and they all became friends throughout the years.
Deloris was a member of the Vici United Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women. She enjoyed sewing for her family and was a longtime member of the Turner Quilting Club. She enjoyed traveling and did so until her health caused her to stay home.
In December, 2010 Wendell Hedges and Deloris were married. Wendell’s children, Becky, Jim, David and Frank joined the family.
Deloris was preceded in death by husband, Roy Aytes; parents, Loyd and Essie Johnston; son, Jimmie and brothers, Milo, Ernest, Jimmie and Dale.
Deloris is survived by husband, Wendell; children, Sandra of Elk City, Oklahoma Randall and wife Dana of Vici, Oklahoma and Joan and husband Rick of Vici; Wendell’s children Becky, Jim, David, and Frank; seventeen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Johnston and wife Eileen of Fargo, Oklahoma and Deletha Thomas and husband Earl of Tipton, Indiana; several aunts, many nieces and nephews and special friends Chub Shaw and family and Ann Barr.
