    • Mary, widow of William Hedges, married second to John Smith of New Castle County, Delaware.

      Mary Hedges, widow of William Hedges, m. between No. 8, 1681 and Feb. 16 1684 John Smith, “ye carpender”. He took his lot Nov.8, 1681 and filed to probate the estate of Wm. Hedges on Feb. 16, 1684, and probably they were m. Feb. 1684, for where there were children of the deceased man, the new husband was compelled to probate at once, to preserve the estate for them.

      To all whom thes Presents shall come Greeting: Know you that John Smith of the town of Newcstle, in behalf of his wife, Mary, ye late widow of William Hedges, hath requested Letters of Administration on you estate of ye sd. William Hedges, who dyed Intestate, & ye sd John Smith hath given security to administer according to law. Thes are therefore by ye Kinds authority grant [piece of paper from foregoing sheet stuck on] at ye Proprietary & Governor to authorize & empower ye sd [piece stuck on, as above] John Smith to administer upon ye Estate goods, chattels [piece stuck on, as above] & other Effects whatsoever belonging to ye sd William Hedges, late deceased, or to him in anny ways appertaining, loweby giving & granting unto ye sd John Smith full power & authority to enter upon & take possession of all ye Estate & premises aforesd & to obtain, Sue for & Recover the same out of ye hands of anny pson or psons, whatsoever that is owing unto or hath ought in custody of or belonging to ye sd William Hedges, Deceased, & showith to satisfye all just debts & doe all other thing or things as by the laws of this Government if directed and all such other lawfull act or acts in or about ye premises as full and amply to all intents & Purposes as any other administrator lawfully may, can or ought to doe. Given under my hand & Seal at Newcastle ye 16th day of February, in ye 57th year of ye Kings Raign & 4th year of ye Proprietary government, 1684.

      Feb. 23, 1687. John and Mary Smith to Justus Anderson.
      John Smith, of the Town of New Castle for & in consideration of a certain parcell of Land confirmed to him by Justus Anderson and for and in consideration of a considerable sum of money secured to be paid before sealing and delivery hereof by said Justus Anderson to the said John Smith he hath given, granted, bargained, sold, alienated, enfeoffed and confirmed and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain, sell, aleniate, enfeoff & confirm for him and his heirs forever to the said Justus Anderson, his heirs & assigns forever, all those Lotts of Land and Housing Scituate in the Towne of New Castle, the said Lotts being bounded to the South East with Mary’s Street; to the South West with the Hart Street; to the North West with the Brewere Street; to the North East with(h) the Land Surveyed for Joseph Burnham containing in breadth one hundred & twenty feet and in Length equall to the rest of the Lotts in that street, with a new Dwelling house & old house & Coew house with all the building; fencing, and Improvements with all the Gardens, Orchards & Apperts thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining; To have & to hold the aforesaid Land, housing and Improvements to him, the said Justus Anderson, his heirs and assigns forever ad the said John Smith & his heirs the Premises & every part thereof unto him, the said John Smith and his heirs and all other persons shall & will Warrent & forever Defend by these presents and for the further Confirmation whereof Mary, the wife of said John Smith for her and her heirs, Enfeoff & confirm the said of the said Justus Anderson, his heirs & assigns forever in the above granted Presmisses.
      In Witness whereof, the said John Smith & Mary Smith, his wife, have hereunto Set their hands & Seales att New Castle, this 23rd of February 1687.

      Justus Anderson to John Smith and Mary Smith.
      Justus Anderson, of New Castle, for & (in) consideration of exchange of a certain house and lot in Towne of New Castle, with John Smith, of ye sd town & for other divers other good reasons and consideracons, him the sd. Justus Anderson thereunto moving . . . doth give, grant, exchange, enfeoff & confirm to the sd John Smith . . . lot in New Castle, bounded to the east with a line drawn through the 2 Lotts bought by the sd Justus Anderson from John Moll; to the south with the heart street; to the west with the minques street; to the north, with Small Lands Lott, being the northwesternmost moiety and Just half part of the aforead 2 Lotts bouth of ye se Justus Anderson, from John Moll, containing in breath 120 ffoot and in Length, one hundred and fivety ffoot, and also one other parcel of Land Scituat in the town of Newcastle, bounded to the Southwest with the Hoy Street; to the northwest, with the common: to the northeast, with the land of Job Nettleship, to ye Southwest, with a line dividing this from ye land of John Burgrane, being the one moiety or half part wch the sd Justus bought of John White, containing about six Lotts, containing in length three hundred fivety two ffoot & a half and in breadth 181 ffoot and a half, to have & to hould the aforesaid 2 tracts of Land and premises . . . unto him the sd John Smith . . . and the sd Justus Anderson and his heirs and the Premises and every part thereof unto the sd John Smith & heirs . . .       Edward Gibbs, (Sheriff) made a return of an execution laid on the house of Justus Anderson for satisfying a judgment obtained by Peter Stalcop against said Anderson.

      John Smith and Hugh Macgregory present a petition concerning an execution laid on the house of said Justa Anderson. The Court order the moneys due to Justus Anderson for the house from Hugh macgregory, be paid to the said John Smith and the creditors who have judgements, so far as the money will extend.

      [Sept. 21, 1688 is latest date for John Smith.

      Justus Anderson ordered Hugh Macgregory to pay all money due sd. Anderson for his house, to pay as far as possible, the judgments vs. sd. Anderson. Anderson acknowledged a deed for a house and ground, Aug. 5, 1688, to Hugh Macgregory (Red. 2, p. 192); Dec. 21, 1688. Hugh Macgregory acknowledged a deed of sale, Dec.2, 1688, to John White, at New Castle, of a house & lot in New Castle.
