The Fern family of Rowan County, N.C., Nicholas, Ky, Indiana, Iowa. Compiled by Mary Margaret Kern Garrard. Limited Edition Printed 1968.
Page 42.
Edward Kern, the second son of Simeon and Rachel Kern, was apparently born in 1807 in Kentucky according to the 1850 census for Indiana. Edward Lived in Pleasant Run Township, Lawrence County, Indiana, in 1850 with his wife, Polly Ann Rice (born 1810 in Kentucky, and had farm land valued at $4,000.
Mrs. Mary Eithel Kern Worley of Bedford, Ind., is daughter of Edward's son Jasper. She gave us (1967) a list of Edward's children which does not entirely tally with the census. We have combined the two.
The children of Edward of Polly Ann Rice Kern were:
Brenyard, b.?
Sophia A., b. 1831, married Anderson Bodenhamer
David S., b. 1834, m.?
John A., b. 1839, m.?

- LKH note:
Polly Ann Kern's will was probated 29 Oct 1880 in Lawrence County, Indiana. In it she names her son Jasper Kern (who gets most of her real estate), her daughter Susan Ray (who gets the silver table spoons and silver teasponns), Alice Adaline Peassed(who gets 10 acres, which will revert to Polly's heir if Alice has no children and Alice should get Polly's sewing machine). That the rest of her personal property be divided between Polly's children and that Alice should receive an equal share as Polly's children. She names Her son, Jasper Kern, executor of her will.

- LKH note:
A child, Alice Kern, age 3, appears in the Kern household in 1860. And appears again in 1870 at age 12.
It would appear from the wording of Polly Ann (Rice) Kern's will that Alice was not her biological child, but was treated as one. I can find no other records of Alice after Polly's 1880 will.
