  • Notes
    • JAMES H. TURLEY was born 16 October 1828 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and died 28 February 1909 in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He is buried in the New Warsaw Cemetery, Warsaw, Kentucky, next to his second wife, Almeda Kirtley Thomas who was born 9 April 1840 and died 9 March 1907. James H. Turley was married twice. His first wife was Anna E. Thomas, who lived only one year after their marriage.

When James H. Turley was twelve he moved with his family from Montgomery County to Gallatin County where he remained until moving to Warsaw, Kentucky, about twelve years before his death. In 1842 he joined the Ten Mile Baptist Church. When the church celebrated its Centennial in 1904, he was one of four who had been members for over fifty years. According to his obituary, while he lived on the farm his hospitality was boundless and his house was usually the home of the minister of his church. In 1850 James H. Turley was living in the family home with his widowed mother and working as a laborer. In 1851 he sold his portion of the property inherited from his father to his oldest brother, Joseph Turley. By i860 James H. Turley was listed in the census with four children. The oldest, Anna E., was six.

James H. Turley's descendants have an announcement dated 9 September 1867 which lists the courses offered and students who attended Warsaw Male and Female College in Gallatin County. James H. Turley' s daughter, Mattie and some of her cousins attended the school. Mattie at that time was eleven years old.

James H. Turley made his first purchase of land in 1860. He bought 108 acres of land on Flat Creek from William Turley and his wife. In 1868 he bought seventy-eight acres on Cincinnati Road from David Lillard, plus another 113 acres there which he subsequently sold to Thomas Jefferson Turley. He and Almeda acquired two tracts of land from John Thomas' estate in 1869. They kept one tract of sixty-nine acres and sold the fifty-seven-acre tract to William 0. Thomas in 1870. Transactions in acreage continued. Two lots in Warsaw were purchased in 1904. In 1909 one-half of one of these lots was sold by the estate to R. B. Brown.
