- John Field Allen
John Field Allen who passed away Monday morning at 11:25 o'clock at the home of his daughter at 1302 Fourth street, had been a well known citizen of Jackson street, this city, for about 43 years.
Mr. Allen was born at Shultz, Ky., in 1851 and would have been 73 years of age on October 5th. When he came to Portsmouth, he took employment with the old C.P.&V. railway, and saw continuous service with that road until it was taken over by the N&W. Mr. Allen was employed as carpenter in the shops and two years ago at the age of 70 was pensioned by the Norfolk and Western.
He mad many friends among the employes and the young as well as the old fellow workmen will be sorry to learn of his passing on. He was always proud of his continuous service record.
The deceased who was the father of twelve children, is survive by seven, five having preceded him to the Great Beyond, with his wife and their mother, who before marriage was Miss Lucinda Hunt of Shultz, Ky. She passed away in 1914. The surviving children are four daughters: Mrs. Alonzo Jacobs, Mrs. Emma Schweinsberg, Mrs. Charles Ross of this city, and Mrs. Mary Martin of Spelterville, Ind.; and three sons, James A. and John H. Allen of this city, and Andrew "Jack" Allen of Ironton.
Burial was in Bennett Chapel cemetery, Shultz, Ky., this morning at 10:30 o'clock.
