Stories of historical days in Vermilion County, Illinois https://archive.org/details/storiesofhistor0tugg/page/56/mode/2up CENTER POINT CHURCH By WlLINORE Moreman, Dist. 170 Teacher, Edna White I have chosen this subject because I am one of the fourth generation of my family to attend the Center Point Church. This church is located about six miles southwest of Fairmount and three miles from Jamaica. In the year of 1891 this church was dedicated by Reverend Brooks of Paris, Illinois. Prior to this time, the people worshipped in the Center Point schoolhouse. It was in the year of 1891, while a revival meeting was being held, that a young lady, Miss Ada Hedges, now Mrs. Ada Smith of Homer, Illinois, desired to enlist in the services and work of her Lord. Her parents, being members of the Church of Christ, sought to start their daughter in the Gospel training and their own faith. A preacher of the New Testament was then called. This minister was the Reverend B. N. Anderson, who held a three weeks' meeting in the Center Point Schoolhouse, and in which building Sunday School and Church were held until February 14, 1891. Sunday School and Church had been held in the schoolhouse in former years occasionally, but there was no organization until 1891. Then the disciples named below met and organized themselves into a congregation of the New Testament teaching: Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hedges, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McKee, Mr. and Mrs. David Sconce, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Greer, Mrs. Matilda Hitchcock, Mrs. Jennie Hopper, Mrs. Lucy Hedges, Mrs. Anna Elliott Sullivan all now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ellis of Macy, Indiana Mrs. Emma Elliott Carrington of Georgetown Mrs. Ada Hedges Smith of Homer Mr. Harvey Elliott of Sidell, Illinois. Elders of the church chosen at the time the church was organized were: Richard Elliott, James A. Hedges. Deacons of the Church when organized: Ed. Ellis, Harvey Elliott. Thirty-two members were received in the first revival meeting, many of whom have "crossed the bar" but whose children and grandchildren are still carrying on the work. The Sunday School attendance on each Sunday is from 35 to 50. There is one man attending who has not missed Sunday School in five years. This man is George Hedges of Fairmount, Illinois. Many have a one year record. Reverend I. L. Cummins of Danville has been the minister of the Church the last five years, and it is thought that his good work has kept the Church thriving and growing.

    Center Point Church
From the Jamaica Fairmount facebook group: 1944- The Center Point Church was sold on site. The church had not hosted regular services since 1939 and closed after many members either died or moved away. The building was purchased by Albert Rohrscheib and was ordered to be removed by April 1 of that year. It was located southwest of Fairmount. During its days of operation, the church had double doors for entry and the men entered on one side while the women went in on the opposite side. Seating was also segregated with women on one side and men on the other. In addition, a platform was built for horse and buggies to pull up to the door, like cars would do now. There was only one wedding documented in the church history, which took place August 11, 1935. Rev. Tobias Cummins performed the ceremony for his daughter, Ruth to Marion Gahan. Marion was a son of John William Gahan, who operated a General Store in Jamaica at one time.

    • Friends gave her a surprise
      (Press-Democrat Special.)
Fairmount, Ill., Sept. 2. - One of the most delightful entertainments of the season was the birthday surprise on Mrs. Geo. Hedge last Sunday, at her home northeast of the village. The event was planned and executed by her husband and daughters. While Mrs. Hedges was busily engaged in serving dinner to some friends who had accompanied her home from Sunday school and church, her friends to the number of seventy-five or more slipped into the front rooms of her home and came marching out to the dining room with her mother in the lead, which, by the way, was a great surprise, the latter having come out from Danville.

The afternoon was spent in a social and religious way. About 4 o'clock the crowd repaired to the front yard where some fifteen or twenty minutes was devoted to song and prayer, and the breaking of bread, which was presided over by Rev. Scott, of Danville, after which the remainder of the evening was spent in song, and social conversation, and the eating of cream, cake and candy and fruit, and a general good time was enjoyed by all. One singular feature connected with their gathering was that the hostess was surprised on her 18th birthday in 1888, in the same house where she now lives. Mrs. Hedges was the recipient of many beautiful pieces of china.
