    Lake Odessa – Henry A. Beland, 78, of Route 1, Lake Odessa, an Odessa Township farmer, died at 1:30 a.m. today in Ionia County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Sunday. He was born March 22, 1876, in Ashcum, Ill, the son of Alphonse and Leah (Raboin) Beland. Mr. Beland married his wife, Rosa, who survives, on Feb. 10, 1909 in Loda, Ill., and they moved to the Sunfield area in 1925. In 1937 they moved to the Lake Odessa area. Mr. Beland was a member of the Odessa Farm Bureau and St. Edwards Catholic Church. Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Mrs. Gladys White of Lake Odessa; Mrs. Leah Cross of Rout 1, Portland, Mich., and Mrs. Rosa Fleetham of Sunfield; two sons, Henry Jr. of Lake Odessa and Thomas of Holt; a sister, Mrs. Ella Houston of Rushville, Ill.; two brother, William of Staceyville, Iowa and Lester of Bloomington, Ill.

    A native of Loda, Ill., she had live in the Sunfield area for many years before moving to Lake Odessa 16 years ago.
    Surviving are her husband, Ralph; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Walsh, Ionia; two sisters, Mrs. Alan Cross, Rural Portland and Mrs. Edgar Fleetham, Sunfield; two brothers, Henry Beland, Lake Odessa, and Thomas Beland, Holt; her mother, Mrs. Rosa Beland, Lake Odessa, and two grandchildren.
    Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Pickens Chapel with burial in Sunfield Cemetery.

    Age 93, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at Heartland Healthcare in Ionia. She was born on February 26, 1912 in Loda, Illinois the daughter of Henry and Rosa (Cogswell) Beland ,Sr.. Mrs. Nash was a member of LeValley United Mehtodist Church. She and her husband farmed for most of her life in Sebewa Township and they enjoyed traveling together. Leah married Allen Jay Cross on April 15, 1930. They celebrated 72 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on May 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Jerilou Cross and sister, Gladys White. Surviving are 4 sons Robert (Judy) Cross, Dean (Maureen) Cross, Donald Cross, Kendall Cross all of Lake Odessa; 1 daughter, Elaine (Donald) Nash of Lyons; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren ; also survived by several step grandchildren and great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister, Rosa (Edgar) Fleetham of Sunfield; brothers, Henry (Beulah) Beland of Lake Odessa and Thomas (Geraldine) Beland of Stanwood, MI.; several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Rev. Mark Johnson, Pastor at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2005 at LeValley United Methodist Church, 1461 E. David Hwy., Ionia. Graveside services will follow after the luncheon at East Sebewa Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. For those wishing, contributions may be made to Heartland Healthcare in Ionia or to the charity of one's choice in memory of Mrs. Cross.

    A gracious lady went home to be with her God on Tuesday May 27, 2014 at the age of 100 plus 5 months. She was born near Loda, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Rosa (Cogswell) Beland. She and her husband Edgar R. were married 71 years before his death in 2005. They joined the Sunfield United Methodist Church as teenagers.

    Surviving are her 4 children, Jeannine (Cecil) Rogers of Sunfield, Ann Merrill of Lansing, Floyd (Sheryl) Fleetham of Grand Haven, Terry (Marsha) Fleetham of Jonesville, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sunfield United Methodist Church, Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth aka S.P.Y.'s, Sunny Crest Youth Ranch, Sunfield Library or any local charity of your choice.

    Funeral services were held Saturday May 31, 2014 at the Sunfield United Methodist Church.

    Henry, 93, of Lake Odessa, passed away Wednesday, at Green Acres Independent Living in Ionia. He was born to Henry A. and Rosa (Cogswell) Beland. At 5 years of age the family moved to Sunfield, Michigan.

    Henry graduated from Sunfield High School where he played all sports and was on the debating team. He graduated Salutatorian of his class and then attended Davenport University in Grand Rapids.

    Henry married Beulah Kime in May 1943 and she preceded him in death on February 22, 2012.

    He was a farmer all his life until retirement and raised a fine herd of Holstein cattle. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Grange, Lions Club, served on the Board of Directors of Union Bank, President of Lake Odessa Co-Op Association, served on the Odessa Township Board and Board of Review and was a member of Lake Odessa Central United Methodist Church.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beulah; two sisters and one brother.

    Surviving is his son, Dallas Beland of Lake Odessa; daughter Sandra Bennett of Midland; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Rosa Fleetham.

    Private family graveside services were conducted.

Dallas is survived by his children, David (Lori) Beland and Becky Cole; grandchildren, Shelby Beland, Gage Beland and Camryn Cole; sister Sandra (Max) Bennett; niece JoLynn (Mark) Sommers; nephews Todd Bennett and Darrin Bennett. Dallas was a Marine veteran and he loved farming, horse racing, hunting, fishing, Detroit Tigers and Michigan State Spartans. Anyone who knew Dallas knew he lived life to the fullest and always knew how to have a good time. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
