Interment will be made in the Homer cemetery.

    MHR note: Willie Gilkison was a strong and long-enduring young man and could cut (with a knife) and shock 1000 socks of corn when 50 was an ordinary man's work. He could lift a horse weighting 100-1100 lbs by crawling under and grasping one fore and one hind leg. He once lifted his cousin, John Hedges, onto the coal house by taking John's wrists in one hand and the slack of John's pants in the other. John was only 10 or 15 pounds lighter than Willie.

    Morehead, Ky. – (INS) – Five persons, including two children, died Saturday when fire destroyed their home at near-by Bluestone.
    The dead: John Gilkison, 50 years old, his wife, Blanche, 46; their grandchildren Glennis, 5, and Mary Lou Gilkison, 2; and the children’s father, Receau Gilkison.
    Fred Gilkison, 16 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gilkison, two of the victims, was seriously burned.
    The family was trapped on the second floor when flames, which stared in the kitchen below, blocked their escape from a stairway. Police investigated the cause of the blaze.

    Russell Gilkison, 73, 221 E. 9th St., was pronounced dead on arrival at Ball Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning. His death was unexpected.
    A native of Rowan County, Ky., he had resided in Muncie for several years. Mr. Gilkison had been an employe of ball Brothers for 18 years retiring eight years ago. He attended the Mayfield Nazarene Church.
    His wife, Mary Belle, preceded him in death 45 days ago.
    He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wayne Day and Mrs. James Story, both of Muncie and Mrs. Carl Basham, Wheeling, W.V.; three sons, Ottis H, Otto H., and Elwood E., all of Muncie; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Maude Ferguson, Muncie; and three brothers, Walter L. and Willie S., Morehead, Ken. and Burt F., Portland.

    Miriam Lucile Hickman of Catlin died at United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, Il. on May 15, 1991. She was born in Catlin Township on April 24, 1909, the daughter of
    William Isaac Albert and Sarah Adeline Cox Gilkison. Miriam married Wayne Hickman on June 12, 1932, at her parents' home in Catlin Township. They lived in northern Illinois where he worked as an electrical engineer and returned to Catlin after his retirement. He preceded her in death on Dec. 18,1981. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Hickman; a granddaughter, Susan Hickman; a sister, Dorothy Thielking; a sister-in law, Mary Gilkison; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Baldridge, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Miriam was preceded in death by a son, Charles Wayne Hickman on June 17, 1970; her parents; two brothers, Charles and Sanford Gilkison; and two sisters, Cena Hickman and Iris Davis. Miriam attended Fayette and Plainview Grade Schools and was graduated from Catlin Township High School and Lakeview Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Catlin Church of Christ. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading, gardening, singing, playing the piano and visiting with relatives and friends. She worked with Girl Scouts, Parent-Teachers Association and church groups, and was known for her good sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at the Catlin Church of Christ at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 1991. Robert Stacy will officiate. Visitation will follow the service. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Catlin Township. Memorials may be donated to lllini Children's Christian Home in St. Joseph, Illinois, or Catlin Church of Christ.     Mort was born December 29, 1914 in Highwood, IL. He was the younger of two sons born to Thaddeus Mortimer Gilkison and Mary Lucille Fitt. He attended grammar school in Highwood and high school in Evanston, IL. In 1936, he graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. He graduate from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1938 with a Master's of Science Degree. Mort was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, professional chemical fraternity, and Phi Lambda Upsilon, honorary chemical fraternity. He was employed by Anderson Clayton & Company for work in vegetable oil refining research in Ft. Worth, TX. He married Elizabeth Mary Bartley in 1940 at St. Mary's Church in Ft. Worth, TX and moved to Abilene, TX. He designed and built a small vegetable oil refinery near Torreon, Mexico. He spent three years in Monterrey, Mexico as an assistant manager of a vegetable oil products plant and eight years in Sao Paulo, Brazil as the manager of a vegetable oil products plant. In 1962, he changed careers and worked as a senior engineer in the aerospace division of Hercules, Inc., which produced Minuteman, Polaris and Poseidon intercontinental missiles. Mort moved to Overland Park in 1968, and worked on the design and construction of a Nitroguanidine facility at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. He was a member of Holy Cross parish since 1968, where he was a member of the choir, Sunshine Club, in which he served as treasurer, and Holy Cross Bridge Club. He had many hobbies, including woodworking and over the years he made several items of furniture and numerous gifts for his family, church and his many friends. He was also an avid crossword, word game and bridge player. He had many varied interests, including trains. His father was a conductor on the North Shore Commuter Railroad. Mort actively followed world class ice-skating and became friends with many world class skaters and their families. He shared this interest with over 60 pen pals around the world. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Joseph Ivan. Mort is survived by his wife, Betty of the home; son, Thomas of Kansas City, daughter, Mary and her husband Richard Wilson of Centerville, KS. He is also survived by his niece, Marie Bartley Coppola of New jersey; nephew, Joseph Ivan Gilkison of Virginia and niece, Jeanne Marie Cooper of Canada. Mort made a positive difference in many people's lives and will be greatly missed.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving during World War II and was also a referee for high school sports. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Sam Averitt of Tucson; grandson, Spencer Averitt of Tucson; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his parents; three brothers, Walter, Alfred and Victor; and four sisters, Maybelle Morris, Hazel Mizera, Loretta Cromwell and Pauline O'Donnell.

She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Jerilou Cross and sister, Gladys White.     A gracious lady went home to be with her God on Tuesday May 27, 2014 at the age of 100 plus 5 months. She was born near Loda, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Rosa (Cogswell) Beland. She and her husband Edgar R. were married 71 years before his death in 2005. They joined the Sunfield United Methodist Church as teenagers.

    Surviving are her 4 children, Jeannine (Cecil) Rogers of Sunfield, Ann Merrill of Lansing, Floyd (Sheryl) Fleetham of Grand Haven, Terry (Marsha) Fleetham of Jonesville, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sunfield United Methodist Church, Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth aka S.P.Y.'s, Sunny Crest Youth Ranch, Sunfield Library or any local charity of your choice.

    Funeral services were held Saturday May 31, 2014 at the Sunfield United Methodist Church.

    Henry graduated from Sunfield High School where he played all sports and was on the debating team. He graduated Salutatorian of his class and then attended Davenport University in Grand Rapids.

    Henry married Beulah Kime in May 1943 and she preceded him in death on February 22, 2012.

    He was a farmer all his life until retirement and raised a fine herd of Holstein cattle. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Grange, Lions Club, served on the Board of Directors of Union Bank, President of Lake Odessa Co-Op Association, served on the Odessa Township Board and Board of Review and was a member of Lake Odessa Central United Methodist Church.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beulah; two sisters and one brother.

    Surviving is his son, Dallas Beland of Lake Odessa; daughter Sandra Bennett of Midland; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Rosa Fleetham.

    Private family graveside services were conducted.

    Streator Youth Dies In Action During Allied Offensive August 25.
    Another name was added to Streators' toll of dead in World War II, with the receipt of a telegram by Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Neblock, 811 South Vermillion street, from the War Department to the effect their youngest son, Pfc. Edward Neblock, 20, was killed in action August 25, in Italy.
    There were no details beyond the mere mention that he had died in action on the date in question.
    Pfc. Neblock had been overseas a little more than a month at the time, leaving here early in June to land in Africa, and subsequently participated in the Allied offensive on the Italian front.
    His last letter home was about three weeks ago, written, it is believed, only a few days before he fell in battl.e
    Before entering the service February 15, Pfc. Neblock was employed by the Owens Illinois Glass Company. He had attended the Streator Township high school, leaving in his sophomore year to enter the employe of Owens Illinois.
    He is survived by his parents and two brothers, William Neblock of Idaho, and Robert, at home.

    Mr. Gilkison was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
    Survivors include a son, Stephen W. Gilkison (wife: Janice) of Indianapolis; two sisters, Ella Jean Day of Orlando, Fla,, a twin to Mr. Gilkison and Leota Basham (husband: Carl) of Wheeling, W.Va., and companion, Pauline Stephens of Muncie.     Raymond Gilkison
    Memorial and Masonic services for Raymond E. Gilkison, 65, of Oakwood were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Carrington Funeral Home 110 E. Court St. Fairmount. The Rev. Tom Hendrickson officiated.
    The family received friends at the Catlin Community Building following the services.
    Mr. Gilkison died at 8:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 11, 1995) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
    He was born May 4, 1930, at Sidell, a son of Sanford and Mary Bedinger Gilkison. He married Katherine J. Walton on Aug. 27, 1948. She survives.
    Also surviving are his mother of Chrisman, three daughters, Mary Kay Dixon of Catlin, Susan Jeane Thomas of Homer and Ramona Ruth Chambliss of Perrysville, IN; two sons, Timothy Alan Gilkison of Fairmount and Raymond Eugene Gilkison of Oakwood; two brothers, John Gilkison of St. Joseph and Jerry Gilkison of Lafayette, CO; and eight grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers.
    Mr. Gilkison retired from the University of Illinois after 27 years as a steamfitter. He was a member of the United Plumbers and Steamfitters for 42 years.
    He was a member of the Catlin Masonic Lodge, the Catlin Church of Christ and the Fairmount Conservation Club. He served with the National Guard.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Carle Foundation Hospital Oncology Department, Urbana.

    Thomas Bartley Gilkison, age 77, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully on Friday, September 23, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born in Abilene, Texas on May 1, 1945, the son of Thomas Mortimer and Elizabeth Mary (Bartley) Gilkison.

    Along with traveling in Texas due to his father’s career, Thomas had the privilege of living in Monterey, Mexico and Sao Paulo, Brazil and experiencing the cultures of these Central and South American countries. Upon returning to the United States, he resided in Texas, Utah, New Jersey, and Kansas.

    Thomas served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He had a career in retail for many years, enjoying the interaction with his customers and the public.

    Thomas was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving sister Mary and her husband Richard Wilson of Centerville; many cousins, especially Marie Bartley Coppola of New Jersey and Jeanne Gilkison Cooper of British Columbia; and caring friends who will miss him dearly.

    Funeral service will be held 2 pm Saturday, October 15, 2022 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 pm to service time.
