1882 History of Linn County, Missouri. BIOGRAPHY - Grantsville Township: 853
James I. Cassity was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, November 1, 1830. His father was William F. Cassity, born in Montgomery county Kentucky, January 1803, and removed in January, 1851, to this county. His vocation was that of farmer and blacksmith. He was a well informed gentleman and respected by all who knew him; he held the office of justice of the peace for several years, and after a life of usefulness he died, in January, 1867. The wife of William T. Cassity[i] was Dora Trumbo, born in Bath county, Kentucky, December 21, 1808; she is yet living. James I. Cassity remained in his native county until October 1, 1849, when he removed with his father to Lee county, Iowa, and from there, after raising one crop, to Missouri, in 1851, the family first settling in Benton township. Mr. Cassity lived with his parents until he was twenty-three years of age, when he began work on his own account on a tract of land given him by his father. In March, 1859, he, with four companions, went to Colorado, where Mr. Cassity remained for three months, being engaged in mining. He returned to this county, January 15, 1860, was married to Mary R. H. Moore, born in this county, January 15, 1842; Esq. Paston officiated on the occasion. The issue of their marriage has been nine children; viz, Dorothy A., Mary J., Isaac F., James W. H., Sarah L., John I., George H., and Daniel Garfield, living, and Essie B., dead. In 1861 he enrolled as a member of the Union home guards, and served in the Federal militia at intervals during the war. Since 1865 he has given his attention to farming. In 1863 he was constable of his township. By industry and economy he has become the possessor of 285 acres of land; is a prosperous farmer, and well respected in his community.

    Notes:

Illah Jean Blair, 86 of Vancouver, WA, passed away March 4, 2010 at her home. Phil, her husband for 65 years, was by her side. She was born on June 20, 1923 in Mindota, MO to Loren and Nina Myers. When Jean was a year old, her family moved to Shreveport, LA where she grew up. She was the youngest of four children: two sisters, LaVon and Foncine and a brother, Junior. While in school, she enjoyed playing the flute and won second place in the state competition.

Jean met Phil, a young Army Air Corps pilot, stationed at Barksdale Army Air Base, who she subsequently married on August 23, 1944. They moved to Vancouver with their newborn son, Steve, October 1945. A year after arriving in Vancouver their second son, Don, was born. While Steve and Don were growing up, Jean devoted herself to homemaking. Sixteen years after Steve was born, Jean and Phil's third son, Joe, was born.

While her boys were growing up, she taught Sunday school, was Cub Scout den mother, room mother and participated in the PTA. We all enjoyed Mom's cooking. Don, with the help of other family members, compiled a book of Mom's recipes, titled "Illah Jeans Kitchen", in which each family member included an anecdote about Mom along with her recipe for their favorite food.

Jean's favorite activities were bowling, Scrabble, dominoes, cards and socializing with friends and family. She and Phil traveled extensively, frequently bragging about being able to fly for free because of passes provided by Steve who was an airline pilot. Mom was very proud of all of her boys. Don provided free dental care and Joe, who runs an air conditioning and refrigeration business in Vancouver, was always available for projects around the house.

Jean is survived by her husband, Phil; her three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Barbara Jo, Don and Kathleen Bemis Blair, and Joe and Lynn; and grandchildren, Angela Haviland, Matt Blair, Wendy Blair, Jason Blair, Roxanne Blair, Kyra Blair, Kellen Blair, Jill Blair and Brendan Blair; and great-grandchildren, Grant McClellan, Nathan Haviland and Mike Haviland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nina and Loren; and her three siblings, Junior, LaVon, and Foncine.

We would like to thank Jean's friends and neighbors for their support. And a special thanks to her care givers: Lydia, Diana, Nijole, Julia and Gayle and Hospice Southwest.

A memorial service will be held Sat., March 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 805 SE Columbia Ridge Dr., Vancouver, WA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association at P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

    Notes:

    Suzanne Cecile Brunazzi Paxton
Monroe – Suzanne Paxton departed this life on September 17, 2019, at Christus St. Joseph’s hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, where she had recently been in hospice care for the grave illness that too quickly ended her days among us.
Born in Dallas, Texas, January 22nd, 1941 to Dr. Richard Brunazzi and Cecile Cassity Brunazzi, Suzanne grew up in Texarkana where she attended Highland Park elementary school, Texas Junior High School, and Texas High School. She graduated in 1958 with classmates who would remain lifelong friends.
While growing up in Texarkana she discovered her enduring love of horses and riding. She was a member of Texarkana Saddle Pals from her junior high years when she participated in competitive equestrian quadrille, flag race, and barrel race at the rodeo. She enjoyed gathering with her friends and Lee’s Drive-In, and was among the first to hear the musi of Elvis Presley on tour at the Texarkana Municipal Auditorium.
She also then began her fervent commitment to her Christian faith and vocation, attending meetings and revivals with her friends while still in high school. She also especially enjoyed summer camps on Lake Ouachita and on the gulf shore in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Following graduation from high school she attended Newcomb College/Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she was active in the sorority Pi Beta Phi. She received her B.A. with a major in Psychology in 1962.
During her first marriage to Thomas Arthur Grant, III, of Monroe, Louisiana, Suzanne gave birth to three children, Cecile, Thomas and Richard. As a young wife and mother, she was an active member of, among other organizations, the Monroe Junior League, Monroe Garden Club, and Grace Episcopal Church. She was on the original Monroe Junior League committee which produced the bestselling cookbook Cotton County Collection.
With her marriage to Albert Paxton, Sr., she moved to the Paxton farm and cutting horse ranch in Tallulah, Louisiana, where she continued to be active in Trinity Episcopal church where she was on the Vestry, the Tallulah Academy where she taught for a number of years, and the Madison Parish Council on Aging where she served as a board member. She was also active in her bridge cub, and numerous other projects and events where Suzanne was noted for the generous contribution she made of her skills in decorating, floral and garden design. She also continued to exercise her love of horses and riding which she shared with her husband Albert and their family. Suzanne and Albert also shared a love of history, especially of the American War Between the States and the American West. Suzanne often served as a knowledgeable guide to visitors through the Vicksburg battlefield.
Suzanne is survived by her children, Cecile Grant Draper of Monroe, Thomas Arthur Grant IV of Monroe, Richard Grant of Westchester, New York, her grandson Jon Draper of Tallulah, her granddaughters Freya Pierson and Gloria Cecile Grant, of New York, her great-grandchildren Henry and Emily Draper, of Tallulah and her sisters, Elizabeth Brunazzi-Weyhe, of Taos, New Mexico, and Cecile Deaglio-Brunazzi, of San Francisco, California.
In lieu of flowers, tributes, donations and contributions requested to go to Trinity Episcopal Church in Tallulah.
