    Services for Mary Charlene Mattix, 83, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Petersen's Funeral Home, Newton. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Sunset Lawn Cemetery, Eldorado.

    Mrs. Mattix died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

    She was born May 24, 1917, in Bloomington Township, Butler County, the daughter of H.R. and Minnie (Lietzke) Van Middlesworth. She moved to Lawrence in 1995 from Newton.

    She attended Wichita State University, earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education from Bethel College and earned a master's degree in library science in 1973 from Emporia State University.

    Mrs. Mattix taught in Eldorado and then taught elementary school in the Newton area for 35 years. She was a member of Daughter of the American Revolution for 40 years. She also was a member of Order of Eastern Star.

    She married Beverly Mattix in 1931. He died in 1951. She later married H.A. Mills. They later divorced.

    Survivors include two sons, Gary Mattix, Houston, and Richard Mattix, Shawnee; a brother, H.R. "Dick" Van Middlesworth, Beaver, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

    A daughter, Sharon Kay Mattix, and a son, Robert Dean Mattix, both died earlier.

    The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

    The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, which is in charge of local arrangements.

    Richard G. Mattix, 70, went to be with his Lord on February 23, 2014. He was born Aug. 14, 1943 to Beverly and Charlene Mattix in El Dorado, Kansas. He made an impact on all he came across that was immeasurable for words. He went to St. John's Military Academy, performed with the military Crack Squad, and served on the Army National Guard Honor Guard, and attended Olivet Baptist Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Sandy; will be remembered by his daughter, Shonn Tew; son-in- law, Dave Tew; grandchildren Haley and Jack; and brother Gary Mattix. Funeral services 11am, Friday, Feb. 28 at Charter Funerals, 10250 Shawnee Mission Pkwy, burial at Sunset Lawns Cemetery in El Dorado, KS. Visitation 5-7pm Thursday evening.
