    Betty Nygaard, age 76, of Northfield died Nov. 28, 2002, at Northfield Hospital.

    Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Benson Langehough Funeral Home and at church one hour prior to the funeral.

    Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Revs. Craig Ellingboe and Michael Mandsager officiating. Music will be provided by Elaine Kallestad.

    Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Willow Creek Cemetery, Royal, Iowa.

    Betty J. Nygaard was born Aug. 26, 1926, to Ansgar and Viola Jensen in Windom. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1944. She was a graduate of Dana College, Blair, Neb., in 1951 with additional credits from Iowa State Teachers Colleges, Ames, Iowa.

    She taught school for several years in Iowa and served as a Lay Missionary for one year with Home Missions of the National Lutheran Council in California and Washington.

    She married Gerhard J. Nygaard of Blair, Neb., on May 30, 1952. Following his graduation from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Blair, they served a Home Mission Congregation in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The second parish was two congregations in the Cushing-Luck, Wis., area. In 1964, they moved to Borman, N.D., where her husband became the Administrator -Chaplin of Sunset Nursing Home, then under construction. After five years there, they received a call from the Northfield Retirement Center, also under construction.

    Betty was certified as a Senior Laubach Tutor in 1975, and from 1978 and on, was a trained advocate with the Northfield Victim Support Program. She taught Sunday School for 40 years and was the Director of Parish Education at St. Peter's Lutheran Church from 1971 to 1980. She also conducted Vacation Church School Workshops for an Augsburg Publishing House in the Southeastern Minnesota District of the former American Lutheran Church.

    In 1989, the Northfield Sertoma Men and Women's Club presented to Betty the Service to Mankind Award for her community service work and the victim support program. Her entry went on to the District Level where she also received the top award.

    During their years in Northfield, she and her husband enjoyed trips to the Soviet Union, Ireland, the heart of Europe, and Hawaii.

    She is survived by her husband; four daughters, Linda of Northfield, Debra of Minneapolis, Sandra (Warren) Skura of Oakdale, and Lisa of Northfield; one brother, Dr. Bruce (Doris) Jensen of Bend, Ore.; two grandchildren; and two nieces and their families.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and twin daughters.

    Memorials may go to St. Peter's Mission Endowment Fund or to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation.
