    Mrs. Smith, a resident 24 years, died at her home yesterday. She was born 60 years ago at Anderson, W.Va.
    She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

    Mrs. Maude Sawyers. 52, mother of Joe Sawyers, athletic coach at Sissonville high school, was found dead in bed Thursday night at her home at Pocatalico. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
    Mrs. Sawyers was born at Clintonville, Aug. 12, 1889, the daughter 0f Henry and Sally Hodges Samples. She was a member of the Ron Ceverte chapter, OES, and the Beckley Methodist church. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Biss Chapel at Pocatalico with Rev. Mr. Brooks officiating.
    Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The body will be removed at 5 p.m. today from the Noble Long Mortuary to the home.

    HINTON - Rayburn Earl Sawyers, 91, of 502 Miller Ave., died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in a Nimitz care home following a long illness.

    Born Nov. 16, 1907, in Smoot, he was the son of the late James L. and Maude Sawyers.

    Mr. Sawyers was a graduate of Ronceverte High School and was retired from C&O Railroad as chief clerk to the superintendent in Hinton. He also was active in Elks Lodge 821, where he established the annual West Virginia State Elks Tournament in 1947 and directed the tournament for 24 years. He was also Elk of the Year in 1987-1988 and awarded an appreciation and long service to the Elks in promoting the Elks Tournament in 1966.

    He was of the Methodist faith, a member of Hinton Masonic Lodge 62 AF & AM, a member of the Railroad Clerks Union, former president of the Toastmaster Club in Hinton and an avid golfer as long as his health permitted. Mr. Sawyers became active in politics and was elected to the House of Delegates in 1962 and to the state Senate in 1966.

    He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Sawyers.

    Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Juanita Williams Sawyers; a brother, Burl Sawyers of Charleston; a nephew, Joe Sawyers of Charleston; three nieces, Judy Crouse and her husband, John, Myra Jarrett and her husband, Dink, and Becky Hodges and her husband, Russell, all of Charleston.

    Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, Hinton, with the Rev. Patricia Weed officiating.

    Entombment will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park Mausoleum.

    Friends may call noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Willow Wood Country Club and Hinton Elks Lodge 821.

    Mark Woodrum, Tom Woodrum, Will Meador, Lin Goins, Hank Hanger, Howard Cody, Milton Foster and Harry Garrett will serve as pallbearers.

    Joseph H. Sawyers, well-known and respected former teacher and coach at Sissonville High School, died Sunday in CAMC, General Division, after a long illness. He was 79. Sawyers, of 7012 Sissonville Drive, retired from the school after 36 years of service. The first coach at Sissonville, Sawyers started football at the school in 1935. In later years, Sawyers recalled the Indians' first football game. "I remember that I got them out early on the Ripley field to make sure they knew how to line up on a football field," he said. "Only two players (27of Sissonville's 90 male students were on the squad) had ever seen a football field." Sissonville's first team lost its opening game 20-0. But many wins were to follow Sawyers' teams won 155 contests before he retired 1970. His 1953 team posted a record of 10 wins and no losses and was considered the best in the state by some sportswriters. Sawyers' team went 9-0. Sawyers coached Sissonville's basketball teams from 1935 to 1965
    He was born at Smoot, Greenbrier County, and graduated from Oak Hill High School. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1934, maintaining a four-year scholarship in all sports and as captain of the variety
    basketball team in 1933-34.
    He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Sawyers studied nine weeks at Schrivenham He was a member of the West Virginia Education Association. He served four years as combat engineer in the European Theater of World. War II. He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church at Sissonville and a charter member of the Bank of Sissonville. He served as bank director from 1976 to 1986. SURVIVING: WIFE, ERNA; STEPSON, GARY SAWYERS OF SMOOT; brothers, Burl Sawyers of Charleston, Ray Sawyers of Hinton; one grandson; three nieces and one nephew of Charleston. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Hill and the Rev. Larry Crawford officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

She was a 50 year member of Eastern Star.

    Jane M. (Samples) Russom was born on September 10, 1923 in Auburn, WA. She passed away in her home in Hansville, WA on July 20, 1998. Jane grew up in South Cle Elum and married Paul in 1941. Jane was preceded in death by her sister Phyllis Bolton in 1979 and granddaughter Marie Sather. Jane enjoyed being an “at home mom” to their four children. She was active in the Sally Johnson Orthopedic Guild. She enjoyed traveling and fishing, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren.

    Paul and Jane are survived by their three daughters: Sheri M. Russom of Kent, Terri Sankey of SeaTac and Rebecca Jones of Chehalis. They had 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. An informal graveside service will be held on June 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM for both Paul and Jane at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Cle Elum, WA. Donations can be made to the Salvation Army or Seattle Children’s Orthopedic Hospital.
