We are in receipt of a letter from W.N. Five days after the operations, the time at which Mr. Cassity wrote, Mrs. Cassity was doing well. They expect to remain there for a month or more. Newt was made janitor of the hospital the second day after their arrival at Oneida.

    Murder Takes New Twist
Witnesses tell of auto near scene of Cassity slaying by gangster in Pasadena
Another mystery automobile was injected into the underworld revenge killing of William J. Cassity, 63 years of age, yesterday at a Pasadena inquest over the body of the man who died before gangsters’ bullets Sunday night because, police assert, he “tipped off” the authorities to active bootleggers in “Little Italy.”
Before the Coroner’s jury returned a verdict that Cassity came to his death at the hands of unidentified persons with homicide intent, two near-witnesses to the killing told of another car, in addition to the one the gunman used, being in the vicinity of Fair Oaks avenue and Alta Lorna Drive, where the shooting occurred.
Donald McIntyre, 471 Eldora Road, Altadena, and Herbert Anderson, 3104 North Raymond avenue, Pasadena, each 16, who were driving near the intersection heard the three shots and saw the gunman drive hurriedly away, leaving his victim dying in the street.
    Car Speeds Away
McIntyre and Anderson also told the Coroner’s jury they saw a small coupe parked at the head of Fair Oaks avenue. After the shots were fired they said the lights of the small car switched on quickly and it sped away. Deputy sheriffs are trying to find a clew to enable them to locate the occupants of the small car.
After the verdict was returned, the officials agreed that Casity was killed by rum dealers because he “talked too much at the wrong place and wrong time.”
August Nelson, who resides in the Cassity home, 777 College street, is believed to be the last person who saw the tinsmith alive. He testified he noticed nothing unusual about Cassity’s demeanor when he left home shortly before he was killed.
    Son Warned Father
A.B. Cassity, son of the slain man, testified he had repeatedly warned his father from informing on bootleggers in the neighborhood in which they lived.
Deputy Sheriffs Monteleone and Croushorn testified concerning the conditions as they found them when they were called to the scene of the killing by McIntyre and Anderson.
Capt. Bright, chief of the Sheriff’s homicide squad, declared yesterday that he and his investigators have not the slightest clew to the identity of Cassity’s murder of murderers.

    Obituary
Died – of quick consumption, after an illness of six months, at the residence of her parents, William N. and Ann E. Cassity, four miles north-east of Wetmore in Brown County, Kansas, at 8 o’clock, a.m., Sunday; June 10, 1888. Mary Alma Jinks.

Deceased was born in Brown County near where she died, Sept. 25, 1864, and was therefore 23 years, 8 month and 10 days old at the time of her death. She was married to Ernest Jinks Feb. 22, 1882, and leaves a husband and two children, Wm. Curtis, five years old, and Bessie May, two years old. She made a last request of her mother to take care of Bessie. Being the last sister of a family of five she much desired to see Willie, the oldest brother who was in Leadville, Col., and telegraphed for but did not arrive until she had passed away – the realities of which none living knoweth.

At the early age of eleven years she joined the Methodist church, and lived an upright believer thereafter. She was a loving daughter and sister, dutiful wife, a kind and loving mother, and leaves a grief-stricken husband, father, mother, three brothers, and last but not least two little orphans who had hardly learned to lisp the dear wore, “mother,” then the monster, Death, snatched her from them; shall we say forever? We hope not.

The funeral took place at the Baptist Church at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon. Rev. T.E. Rolfe delivered one of his very able funeral discourses to some three hundred relatives and friends of the deceased, after which a long train followed the remains to its final resting place in the Wetmore Cemetery.

The parents and husband of the deceased extend to all who in any way helped them in their sad bereavement, their heart-felt thanks.

    Notes:

    W.C. Jinks
It was with universal regret that the friends and relatives of this community learned Monday night of the death of W.C. Jinks at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kansas City. The body was brought to Goff Wednesday noon, accompanied by Mrs. Jinks, Mrs. Bessie Greenwood, sister of the deceased, and W.E. Howland, brother of Mrs. Jinks, and taken to the home of the bereaved wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Howland.
Death was due to a disease of the bones. An injury to the right foot of the deceased last September caused an infection that meant months of suffering. The right limb was amputated several months later in the hopes of benefitting the condition, but the disease steadily grew worse until death came as a relief to the departed Brother.
William Curtis Jinks was born February 7, 1883, near Goff, Kansas, and departed this life Monday, May 15th, 1916, at 8:00 p.m., at the age of thirty-three years, three months and eight days. Mr. Jinks grew to manhood in this community, and except for a short time has always made this his home. He was manager of the Goffs Telephone Co. for a number of years and has followed that line of work. He held the respect of everyone for his manly virtues, good citizenship and brotherly love. On September 5, 1905, he was married to Miss Florence M. Howland of Goff. Besides Mrs. Jinks, the deceased is survived by his father, Earnest Jinks of Goff, and his sister, Mrs. Bessie Greenwood of Topeka.
Funeral services will be held today from the Goff Christian church. Rev. A.L. Woods of Valley Falls, former M.E. Minister here and a friend of the deceased, will preach the funeral sermon. Corning Lodge No.13 A.F.&A.M. will have charge of the burial ceremonies at Fairview cemetery, and the last rites of Masonry will consign the remains of a Worthy Brother to the Supreme Architect. Members of the Masonic order will serve as pall bearers.
The sincere sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved widow, sister, father and other relatives in the lost of a thoughtful husband, brother, son and friend.

    A Terrible Disaster
While freight train No.36 in charge of Conductor Daniels was coming east and passing through DeSoto, a little town twenty miles west of Argentine about 7 o’clock Saturday morning, the engine, the 1120, in charge of Engineer F.W. Bartell and Fireman W.W. Dortch, exploded just as it reached the Kill creek bridge, which is just at the east end of the DeSoto switch. The force of the explosion wrecked the bridge and into the creek below plunged the engine followed by fourteen cars containing hogs, cattle and merchandise. Engineer Bartell and H.E. Shaw, head brakeman, who was riding in the engine were buried in the wreck. The escape of Fireman Dortch was most miraculous. He was thrown by force of the explosion clear of the wreckage into Kill creek where he caught hold of a piece of driftwood and drifted out into the Kaw river which is only a short distance from the bridge. There he changed to get hold of a piece of one of the demolished cars and on it, wet and half frozen, floated down the rived till rescued by a man in a boat several miles below near Loring on the opposite side of the river. He was taken to a farm house more dead than alive. He has fully recovered and has returned to his home in this city where he was a young wife to whom he was only recently married. The dead body of Brakeman Shaw has been taken from beneath the wreck and was removed to his old home at Topeka for burial. He resided at 34 North Seventh street this city and leaves a wife and child 3 months old. When The Republic went to press the body of Engineer Bartell had not been recovered from the wreck. He resided on South Seventh street this city where he leaves a wife and child. Brakeman Shaw was just making his second trip on the road when he lost his life. The wreck crew from here are getting the wreck pretty well cleared up.
