MHR note: William "Albert" Hedges was captured in the Civil War and died in camp, Richmond, Virginia, age 23 years. His Bible was sent home by a fellow soldier, and a note that wasn't signed. "Albert" was captured on the bridge near Farmer, Kentucky when the rebels destroyed it. The picture on the wall of Tina Ellington's home says William A. Hedges, d. Nov., 1865, aged 23 years.
MHR note: in letter from Ida Cronkhite dated 13 February 1951. William Ribelin Hedges brother, Jesse, married Lucy Ann Hawkins. I don't remember surely of all the children, but Albert, 20 I think, joined the "rebel" army and was killed at the battle of Shiloh. Later his brothers, Marcus and Thomas joined the Union Army.

Research by Polly Singerman, 2021: There is some minor controversy about the military career of William Albert Hedges (son of Jesse). After a long search of the National Archives, I think I have it: Searching military records of the National Archives and Records via fold3 yields this timeline for William Albert Hedges' Civil War Service.
•10/22/1861 Enlisted as a private in Co. F, 1st Battalion, Kentucky Mounted Rifles, a Confederate unit.
• 9/1/1862 Discharged. Apparently he reenlisted.
• 6/16/1863 Captured in the Battle of Triplett's Bridge in Rowan County, Kentucky.
• 6/24/1863 Received at Camp Chase, a prison camp in Columbus, Ohio, then transferred to Johnson Island Prisoner of War Depot in Sandusky, Ohio.
• 11/30/1863 Transferred to Point Lookout Prison Camp in Maryland, where disease was rampant.
• 9/18/1864 Paroled at Point Lookout, exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia. Admitted to Chimborago, a Confederate hospital, Richmond, Virginia.
• 10/1/1864 Died, cause of death "Diarrhoea, chron." He was 24 years old.
