    Martin Jasper Hawkins, son of W.M. and Rosanna Hawkins, was born August 22, 1865 in Rowan county, Ky. He lived in Mason county, near Maysville, Ky, during the Civil War. He moved with his parents to Brown county, near Wetmore, Kas., in 1864, then to Buchan county, Near DeKalb, Mo., at about 10 years of age, then to Clinton county, just east of where Lilly now is, living there for one year, then in what was known as the Benton farm for four years, then to their farm four miles southeast of Plattsburg.
    He was married to Nancy Catherine Fry, January 12, 1876. They began their married life on a farm six miles southeast of Plattsburg. To this union were born three children: Gertrude, Bertha and Alma. Alma died in infancy. In 1888 they moved to Lilly, Mo., where he opened a general store. He operated this store from that dat until December 14, when he became ill and he and his wife went to their daughter’s home, Mrs. Geo. R. Hall, where he passed away February 8, 1943. He leaves as survivors his wife, Mrs. Catherine Hawkins, two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Matthews of Kearnel and Mrs. Bertha Hall of the home; also two grandchildren, Mrs. Bunice O’Neill of Kansas City and Oren F. Matthews, pharmacists mate 2nd class of the Navy, Bainbridge, Maryland.
    Funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist church on February 9, conducted by the pastor, Elder J.C. Jones.

She was a member of the Methodist church. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah lodge. She also leaves a son, Oran Mathews, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Hall, both of Kearney. Funeral services will be at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday at the Kearney Methodist church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Kearney.

Mrs. Hall was a member of Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church, near Trimble, Mo. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fry Chapel, Kearney; burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the chapel.

She taught at Kearney and Windwood Elementary Schools in the 1920s. During WWII, Mrs. O'Neill worked at the Bendix Plant. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Clay County Chorus, the Rebekah's, and the Kearney United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ora O. Mr. Mathews was born September 18, 1910, in Kearney, MO, the son of Jacob E. and Gertrude Hawkins Mathews. He was reared in Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School in 1927. He attended Pharmacy School in Kansas City, MO, and graduated as a Pharmacist in 1936. He owned and operated Mathews Drugs in Kearney from 1957 until his retirement in 1975. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5717, Kearney. He served as mayor of Kearney from 1954 to 1960. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and Kearney Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Mathews was a Charter member of the Kearney Lions Club. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Kearney Trust Company. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kearney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, and a sister, Burnice O'Neill. He is survived by a brother-in-law, Charles Porter, Kearney, nephew, Gary Porter and his wife, Sandra, Independence, MO, a niece, Nancy Hamilton, Bakersfield, CA, several great-nephews and nieces as well as great-great-nephews and nieces.
