Omaha's pioneer liveryman, Chris Dietrich, made his last hitch at 11:55 Thursday night on a call for a ride to the "bourne" from which no traveler e're returns. Surrounded by his two sons and a daughter the pioneer's end was as peaceful as his life had been useful. For a number of years his son Edward has conducted his business at the Douglas street stables at 1114 Douglas street, where the pioneer and civil war veteran passed his last hours in the living rooms over the stable. He was 75 years old.
Dietrich came to Omaha fifty years ago and immediately took a situation herding cattle over the prairies which are now comprised of beautiful residences in the Walnut Hill district. He was the first toll collector on the bridge connecting the cities of Omaha and Council Bluffs.
About twenty-five years ago he started in the livery business on Sherman avenue, where he remained for several years, finally removing to the quarters on Douglas street and then turned the business over to his son Edward.
He was a veteran of the civil war and a member of Custer post, Grand Army of the Republic, which organization will have charge of the funeral of the old comrade. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C.G. Edmunds, 4110 North 28th Ave.
