- Rufus R. Gabel
Rufus Reber Gabel, 85, Manhattan, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, in St. Mary Hospital.
He was born Nov. 1, 1910, at Vessie, Mo. He attended grade and high schools in Edgar Springs, Mo., and the Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Mo.
He married Sidney Hedges in 1957 at Kansas City, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Gabel was a life insurance agent for Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa, a member of the Kansas City, Mo. Life Underwriters Association and owned and managed the first agency for Preferred Risk Insurance Company in Kansas City, Mo.
He served as a lifetime deacon, Sunday school superintendent, training union director and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Santa Fe Hills Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., and had served on the executive board of the Kansas City Baptist Association in the training union program.
He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Douglas Gabel, in September 1995.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Ann McGinness, Clinton, Mo., and Jan Slezinger-Johnson, Manhattan; two sons, Gregory Alan Slezinger, Kansas City, Mo, and John L. Slezinger III, Beaverton, Ore.; a sister, Opal Zimmeman, Fort Myers, Fla; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens in Manhattan.
The casket will remain closed.
