Fort Bayard Cemetery is located in the Fort Bayard Historic District, approximately 1.5 miles north of Santa Clara. Established in 1866, the fort was named after Brigadier General George Dashiell Bayard, who died in 1862 in the Battle of Fredericksburg and is buried in Princeton Cemetery in New Jersey. The cemetery was given the official name of Fort Bayard in 1922. Both the fort and the cemetery were added to the National Register of Historic Places in July, 2002. The fort was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2004.
