Oak Ridge Cemetery is one of the oldest, still-active, burying grounds in its local environs. Several surnames found in the cemetery such as Armstrong, Brown, Clark, Hall, King, Peters, Sheeks, Van Riper, Vreeland, and West correspond with names of local streets and roads.
In 1876 the land that is now Oak Ridge Cemetery was owned by Jacob Reese Vreeland and Abrahm Helfrich; both of them are buried in Section J, the original part of the cemetery, which is also referred to as “the old section.” Public burials are thought to have begun about 1880, but there are Vreeland Family tombstones with death dates prior to that time, which supports the belief that the cemetery began as a family burying ground.
By 1900 the cemetery bore the name, Mount Hope, and many surnames other than Vreeland began to appear. By 1924 the cemetery had expanded by several additional sections and was renamed Oak Ridge. In 1983 it was purchased by Fred Bradford and is still owned by the Bradford Family. The cemetery was transcribed in 1989 and then again in 1997 by members of the Downriver Genealogical Society.
