    BALDWIN CITY -- Lowell Arthur Gish, 73, Baldwin City, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at a Lawrence hospital.
    Mr. Gish was chairman of the education department at Baker University from 1963 until he retired in 1995. He later taught and served in various capacities at Haskell Indian Nations University. He began his career as a teacher and coach at Wilmore in 1949. He served as the elementary school principal in Kinsley for three years and then as superintendent of the Wilmore Schools until he moved to Ottawa in 1956. He was principal at Ottawa Junior High School for several years before he joined the staff at Baker University. He also served in the Merchant Marine in 1945 and 1946.
    He was born June 30, 1927, in Greeley, Colo., the son of Lee Nash and Rose Bedford Gish. He was raised in Kingman and graduated from Kingman High School. He earned a bachelor's degree at Southwestern College in Winfield in 1949 and later earned a master's degree and his doctorate at The University of Kansas.
    Mr. Gish was a member of First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, Phi Delta Kappa and the Douglas County Democratic Party.
    He married Enola McClaren on Aug. 14, 1948, at Lewis. She survives.
    Other survivors include two sons, David Gish, Topeka, and Stephen Gish, Tonganoxie; two daughters, Juanita Reiter, Hillsboro, Ore.; and Diana Gish Truckfield, Barrow, Alaska; and 10 grandchildren.
    Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. Inurnment at Oakwood Cemetery near Baldwin City will be private. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Osborne Chapel on the Baker University campus.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Lowell Gish Memorial Fund to benefit the Education Department at Baker University and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Baldwin City.

    Graveside services for Rose E. Belford Gish, 90, Baldwin, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Augusta. The Rev. Burl Allison Jr. will officiate both services.

    Mrs. Gish died Tuesday at a Baldwin nursing home.

    She was born Nov. 1, 1899, in Hays. She grew up in Greeley, Colo., attended Greeley schools and graduated from Greeley High School. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Sterling College in 1921, where she was president of her senior class.

    Mrs. Gish and her husband lived in several Kansas communities, including Hamilton, Belpre, Little River, Kingman and Augusta. She lived in Wichita for a short time and moved to Orchard Lane Nursing Home in Baldwin in 1982.

    She taught Latin, French, German and Spanish and coached girls basketball in Colorado schools before she married.

    Mrs. Gish was a member of First United Methodist Church in Augusta and had been a 50-year member of PEO Sisterhood.

    She married Lee M. Gish on Sept. 24, 1923, in Greeley. He died in 1975.

    Survivors include three sons, Lowell, Baldwin, Larry, Stillwater, Okla., and G. Merlin, Merriam; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Margaret A. Bedford, 68 years old, died at her home, 1226 Fourth street, at 9:35 Wednesday morning. Mrs. Bedford had been ill for some time, but her death was unexpected.
    She is survived by four children, Everett and Bessie Bedford of Greeley; Mrs. Lee Gish, Little River, Ran.; and Merton Bedford, Santa Barbara, Calif. She was the wife of the late George S. Bedford.
