    Notes:

Obituary from Find a Grave and Kim Thompson:
    The Morning Sun News-Herald.

Mrs. Catharine McElhinney-Baird was born near Londonderry, Ireland, August 10th, 1822. She departed this life April 14th, 1900.

When about 3 years old she came with her parents to the United States, and after residing a series of years In Pennsylvania and New York; emigrated to Iowa, with the rest of the family, where they arrived April 15, 1840.

She lacked a single day of having lived in [outside?] the state 60 years.

She was married to John Baird in Philadelphia, March 12, 1840. Mr. Baird's death occurred on July 4th, 1881, so that she lived in widowhood almost 19 years.

She was in the truest sense of the word a mother. Five sons and six daughters live to mourn her death. One child died in early life.

Her grandchildren number 29, and her great-grandchildren, 3. She was eminently practical in all her life work. "She managed her affairs with discretion."

She loved her church devoutly, and understood the principles upon which It stood. She attended church when it cost her much effort, and when she felt unable to go any other place. During her last illness, her mind was unusually clear; her anticipation of the approaching end was with a quiet faith, a comfortable hope, a well grounded assurance. In herself she saw nothing on which to depend. In Jesus Christ she saw all that her soul desired. Her end came painlessly and peacefully, like the light of the morning-star that does not set but melts away into the clearer light of the eternal day. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace."

The funeral was attended by a vast concourse of people and among the mourners were a large number of early settlers. We note year by year how their number is being diminished. The emigrants are again emigrating -- this time to a land where infirmities of age, and sickness, and sorrow, and separation are words unknown.

May their posterity be as true to the right and as loyal to duty as the fathers and mothers were. "Show thy work unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children."

    Notes:

It is possible that there is a record referring to this Robert McElhinney in the records of the Round Prairie Presbyterian Church minutes as he is in the same neighborhood as Mr. Joseph Stewart in census records of the time. See page 16-17. April 1st, 1850. At the request of Mr. Joseph Stewart a member of Round Prairie Church, Session convened to investigate the truth of certain allegations by public rumor affecting the Christian character of said Stewart. Members of Session present, Rev. Salon Cowles Mod by request & Elders Waddle, Pearce & McClure. The meeting was opened with prayer. Mr. Stewart and some of the witnesses being present Session resolved to proceed with the investigation. Mr. Stewart acknowledged the fact of his taking two loads of corn from the field of Robert McElhinney in the winter of 1849 without his knowledge or consent. But plead that he had done what he believed to be right as his cattle were suffering & the roads were not broken that he could conveniently go to see Mr. McElhinney to ask him for it & that he believed he would not have denied him the corn. Mr. McElhinney was sworn & stated that he was not yet paid for the corn. That Mr. Stewart informed him some two or three weeks after he took the corn & promised to pay for it soon. That he would have let him have the corn if he had asked for it. That he knew of nothing to prevent Mr. Stewart from coming to ask for the corn. Mr. Stewart also acknowledged that he had cut timber on the lands of Mr. McClure & Mr. Bell without their consent. But plead that he believed at the time he cut the timber that a road was laid out through said lands & that he had a right to open it, although he afterwards ascertained that he was mistaken. Mr. Baughn was sworn & stated that something less than two acres of young timber was cut on the land of Mr. ___M. McClure & that of considerable value. I charge that Mr. Stewart had violated a contract with Robert Owen in relation to monica matters was prepared for the present to wan to testimony. The testimony being closed, the Session after mature deliberation decided, that Mr. Stewart acknowledge that he was wrong and imprudent in not asking Mr. McElhinney for the corn, & in not paying him for it, & that he as soon as possible, play him for it. Also, that Mr. Stewart acknowledge that he was wrong & imprudent in that he did not inform himself in reference to his right to cut the timber on the lands of McClure & Bell & that he give a suitable remuneration for said timber. Also that Mr. Stewart promise to be more guarded hereafter in such matters. Mr. Stewart submitted to the decision of Session. Session closed with prayer. M. McClure, Clerk.
