    Greta Porter and her husband Karl Porter and their 16-year-old son Karl Jr. were in the family car going for a Saturday evening visit with friends when, at 7:17 PM, they were crossing the train tracks near the train station at Wakarusa, KS. A train that was running 15 minutes late, suddenly came around the bend and crashed into their car, pushing the car about fifty feet down the track and instantly killing all three of the Porters. The older Porters were thrown about fifty feet from the car. Karl Jr. was thrown also, but less far. They were in a 1939 Plymouth automobile.

    The daughter, Irma Eveline Porter, lived at Junction City, KS at the time of her parents' death. Irma was married to Ralph D. Winters. Irma was born 18 Nov 1917 in Auburn, KS. She died 14 Sep 2001 in Las Vegas, NV.

    Greta and husband Karl were married 24 Feb 1917 in Topeka, KS. They farmed near Auburn, KS. They were Presbyterians.

    Notes:

    A Pioneer Preacher
    Rev. William Parker is dead.
    He was one of the best known Baptist preachers in Kansas.
    Coming to the state long years ago he gave his life to the upbuilding of the church of his choice.
    He was a missionary and founded many churches in the Ninnescah Valley [Kansas] and ministered to many of them.
    Rev. Parker died at his home in Valley Center Wednesday night and will be buried today at Clearwater. He was a man 83 years of age, but still active in the preaching of the gospel.
    A service was held at Valley Center and one will be held today at Clearwater.
    A good man has gone to a great reward and "his works do follow him."


    Rev. Wm. Parker and Moses Parker, both members of the Baptist church, the one from Iowa and the other from Illinois, have purchases places near Clearwater. The Lacon Journal speaks very highly of Elder Wm. Parker and notices the fact that eh started two cars loaded with find cattle and sheep, fruit trees and implements for Wichita, and speaks with regret of the loss to the schools of Miss Nettie, his daughter. We welcome the gentlemen to our valley.
