Walter Knox Crawford, son of William J. and Hannah (McKeown) Crawford, was born near Mediapolis, Iowa, Sept. 10, 1880, and passed from this early life Aug. 13, 1957, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 3 days.
When the boy was five years of age, the family moved to a farm near Superior, Nebraska. Here Walter spent the most of his active life, engaged in farming and stock-raising. In 1946, on account of failing health, he retired from farm work, and moved to Loveland, Colorado.
In early manhood, he united with the Reformed Presbyterian (Scotch Covenanter) Church, but later on , he transferred his membership to the United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Crawford was a quiet and unassuming man, a kind an helpful friend and neighbor, faithful in the discharge of every duty. With the tender solicitude of a father he assumed responsibility for his sister’s four orphaned children. The latter part of his life was marked with weakness and suffering, but his affliction was borne with a patient resignation which told of a genuine faith in the sovereign wisdom and goodness of God.
Those remaining to mourn Mr. Crawford’s passing are his sister, Celia Crawford, Loveland, Color.; two nephews and one niece, Charles C. Moranville, Sparks, Nevada, Walter C. Moranville, Arvada, Col., and Ruth (Moranville) Tjaden, Madrid, Neb.; also four grandnieces, four grandnephews, together with other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Notes:

W.J. Crawford was born in Pittsburg, Penn., November 14, 1850, and passed away September 22, 1931 at his home near Bostwick, Nebr., at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 8 days. When just a small boy he with his parents moved to Des Moines county (sic), Iowa, where he lived until 1885.

On February 22, 1876, he was united in marriage to Hannah McKeown. Five children came into this home, four of whom are now living. The eldest, a son, died in infancy.

In 1885 Mr. and Mrs. Crawford and family came to Nebraska and located on the farm where he resided until the time of his death. Mrs. Crawford preceded him in death, on June 11, 1918.

At the age of 22 he became affiliated with the Reformed Presbyterian church (sic) of Sharon, Iowa. Thirteen years later, when they moved to this community, he and Mrs. Crawford placed their names on the Beulah roll of membership. This was over 45 years ago. Mr. Crawford was a pioneer both in this community and in the life of the Beulah congregation. He was steadfast in his faith and for a number of years performed the duties of ruling elder in the Beulah congregation, the highest office the church can offer a layman. For many years Mr. Crawford was the Session's efficient clerk.

He leaves to mourn his loss, two sons and two daughters, Walter, Claude and Celia Crawford, and Mrs. Zella Moranville; four grandchildren: Esther, Charles, Water and Ruth Moranville, all of this place; two brothers and three sisters: Robert and Edd Crawford, Mrs. Cora White, Mrs. Eva Guy and Mrs. Ila Hill, all of southern California; besides other relatives and many close friends.

Funeral services were held in the Beulah church (sic) at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor Rev. A.J. McFarnland, assisted by a mixed quartet and interment was made in the Beulah cemetery (sic).

"Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from henceforth, yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."

I would say most of the settlers here are from the vicinity of Morning Sun and all are well excepting Mr. Henry McKeown who came here a little over a year ago, from Linn Grove. Mr. McKeown received a paralytic stroke on last Monday, as he was rising from a chair to give to his son as he entered his house, he fell in the arms of his son Robert McKeown. Mr. McKeown immediately lost his speech and the power of his right side. At this writing he is some better, but can only speak. It is hoped that he will recover his speech.

NOTE: Henry did not move to Superior, Nebraska. All census records show him and his family in Yellow Springs, Des Moines County, Iowa.

From Yellow Spring and Huron: A local history. By J. W. Merrill. Published by author in 1897. Book in Wisconsin Historical Society Library. Pages 133-134. May 12, 1848, two young men, Henry and John McKeown, landed in Burlington and came directly to Yellow Spring township, and entered land. Henry entered the land on which he lived for many years. After securing his home he returned to Ohio and married. His wife came with him to his western home, but she lived only a short time. Later he made another trip to Ohio, and married Rebecca Paxton. He lived on his farm and raised his family of seven children, all of whom went to Superior, Nebraska as they became of age. The parents moved there later, where the father died in a few years. This branch of the family are all in the west.

John married Ann Parker, daughter of John and Margaret Parker, in 1848. He lived on this original farm till 1865, when he sold to R. M. Wilson, and bought 240 acres of Wm. Lyon, on the Wapello road, where he lived till after the death of his wife which occurred March 7th, 1892. There were twelve children born to these parents; three died in childhood. Those living are Sarah J., James A., Mary L., Moses P. lives at Myrtle, Iowa, John L., Perry, Ok. , Samantha, Burlington, Emma, Ira, Eau Claire, Wis., Albert, Burlington. The father now has his home with his son James.

Wednesday at Beulah churchyard was laid to rest the remains of aged Grandma McKeown – 80 years and 17 days old. Mrs. McKeown died Monday evening at the home of her son-in-law J. Crawford. She was also mother of Mrs. J. Adams and Robert McKeown. A large concourse of friends followed the funeral cortege to the cemetery. Rev. Smith had charge of the services.

In the name of the Benevolent father of All, I, Alexander McKeown of the County of Harrison to make and publish this my last will and testament. Item First. I give and devise to my beloved wife [in turn?] of her downer this farm on which we now reside situated in Freeport Township, Harrison County, State of Ohio containing about one hundred and fifty one acres during her natural life and all the stock, household goods furniture and provisions and the goods and chattels which may be there at the time of my decease, during her natural life as foresaid. At the death of my said wife the real estate as foresaid and such part of the said personal property as my remain be sold and the proceeds to be equally divided betwixt the following children my heirs, viz: Alexander McKeown, Arthur McKeown, Adam McKeown, William McKeown, Mary Jan McKeown, Lavina Margaret McKeown and Rosana McKeown. Share and share alike. Item Second: I give and bequeath to my son Alexander McKeown one hundred dollars to be paid him at my decease if needed extra. Item third: I give and bequeath to my son Arthur McKeown one hundred dollars to be paid at my decease if needed.
