David McMartin of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Fay, who died Monday, was a retired plumber. He was in Visalia for a week’s visit. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gratia Van Den Heuvel of Alameda, and two sons, Thomas of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Lester, Jr., of Florida. His home was in Tracy, Calif. He was born July 14, 1888. He lived in this area during the 1940s, and was married to the former Elizabeth Thomas of Phoenix, Ore. She preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Gratia Van Den Huebel, 1626 Walnut st., Alameda, Calif.; two sons, Lester Fay Jr., who lives in Florida, and Thomas Fay, Klamath Falls; and three grandchildren. 2507 | Liff, Edna Meryle Thomas Died Sunday morning August 3, 1996 in Oakhurst California. She was 95. Edna was the granddaughter of an early California family. Her grandfather, John Brown Parker, was the first Postmaster and the first Justice of the Peace of Pomona, California. In 1899 her father, Benjamin Franklin Thomas and her uncle, Perry Parker went to seek gold in the Klondike. Edna was born in Los Angeles and lived more than 70 years of her life there. She was a resident of Mariposa for 15 years. She had a very sweet nature and endeared herself to everyone who knew her. She is survived by a sister, Ethelda Turner of Rio Vista, California and her daughter, Betty Boykin of Mariposa, California, a niece and two nephews. Neptune Society of Central California. Fresno. 2508 | Lillian Ruth Reed, 88, of Lincoln, died Thursday, March 13, 2008. Reed was born in Casper, Wyo., to Leonard C. and Lena (Duncan) Forsman Jan. 28, 1920. A cremation with no viewing and a private burial will take place at the Celebration of Life at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 5200 Francis, Lincoln, on April 19 at 2 p.m. Memorials can be sent to Fourth Presbyterian Church for Mission in Pakistan and condolences or personal reflections may be sent online at www.roperandsons.com. Lillian graduated from Natrona County High School in Casper. She married Roland Floyd Reed in 1937. Roland and Lillian farmed north of Morrill, Mitchell, and Scottsbluff for 50 years. Lillian raised a family of three sons, and one daughter in rural Sioux and Scotts Bluff Counties. Education was important to her and she encouraged her children to attended college. She was an avid reader and a life-long learner. She attended classes in accounting and in tailoring at Scottsbluff Junior College. Lillian has been a member and leader in the Presbyterian Churches of Morrill; and later (1988) Fourth Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. Lillian was an Elder in both churches, a Sunday school teacher and has held many church offices including president of Presbyterian Women (Morrill Church), and Box Butte Presbyterial. An honorary PW membership was granted to her in 1974. She was an officer of the Nebraska Synodical. Lillian served as delegate three times to the Purdue conference of Presbyterian women. As one of the early women elected church elder (1955), she has twice been a delegate to General Assembly (1955, 1974). She has served as a Cub Scout Den Mother (nine years), Extension Club leader/member (45 years), and 4-H leader (10 years) in Sioux County. After an early retirement, Lillian and Roland traveled abroad several times going to Germany, Greece, India and Pakistan. When her husband could no longer travel, she went with a friend to China. Lillian and Roland served as Volunteers in Mission in Pakistan for the Presbyterian Church six winters. Upon returning to the USA, they shared about the work they had seen through mission interpretation in many churches. Lillian was caregiver for her husband who lived 20 years with Alzheimers. Since moving to Lincoln, she has been a Senior Companion for 13 years, has worked as substitute manager for the Calvert Senior Center, and served as a companion and friend with Project Help. She continued to be active in church activities, serving four terms as ruling elder and also as vice-president of Presbyterian Women (Fourth Presbyterian Church). She is survived by: son/daughters-in-law: Lee & Mary Reed of Lincoln, son Robert of Kansas City, Mo., daughter/son-in-law Ruth Anne and Ron Ries of Junction City, Kan., and by second cousin and former-daughter-in-law Christina Reed of Kansas City, Mo. Grandchildren and spouses include: Susan and Richard Gifford of Scottsbluff, Marika and Tim Crosby of Asuncíon, Paraguay, Carol and Robert Klein Sterling; Kim and Ananda Palanichamy of Mt. Dr. James Kenneth Little, age 93, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2000, at his home in Davis, California, after a short illness. He was born in Alden, Kansas, on September 1, 1906. Dr. Little’s professional career was devoted to teaching, research, and public service in education. Beginning as a high school teacher in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, he rose to become a professor and vice president of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he spent 37 years before retiring to California in 1971. Dr. Little was a man of varied achievements. He received an A.B. degree from Sterling College (Kansas) in 1928, a M.S. degree from Emporia State University (Kansas) in 1931, and a Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University in 1934. In 1950, Sterling College awarded him an honorary LL.D. degree. In 1954-55, while on leave from University duties, Dr. Little served as U.S. Deputy Commissioner of Education, under the then Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He returned in 1960-61, to direct a research project on federal programs in high education that had been authorized by the U.S. Congress as part of the National Education Defense Act. Dr. Little also was appointed to task forces named by the U.S. Department of Defense to review and make recommendation on their education-related programs. These assignments took him to stations in Europe, Ethiopia, and South Vietnam. In Wisconsin, his activities included: appointments by the Governor to the staffs of the Coordination Council on Higher Education, and the Governor’s Commission on Education; the Community Welfare Council of the City of Madison, and chairman of its committee on Needs and Priorities. He was the faculty representative of the University of Wisconsin to the Big Ten Athletic Conference, and participated in the arrangements for the Rose Bowl Pact with the Pacific Athletic Conference (PAC-10). He was president of the University of Wisconsin YMCA board of directors, and was co-director of the Center for Studies in Vocational Education. Immediately before his retirement, he was senior fellow at the American College Testing Program, Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Little was a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association of Educational Research, and the American Association of High Education, of which he was president 1951-52. Dr. Little is survived by his wife, Faye, to whom he was married for 69 years; a son, Philip (Colleen), of DeForest; a daughter, Connie (Roger) Sebek, Vancouver, Washington; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ken (Elaine), of Auburn, California. Memorial contributions to the University of Wisconsin Foundation are suggested. Interment will occur at Lafayette, California. That new office included Bill and Alma Gruendike and Charles M. Crowe, all from the old office. Both Bill and Alma appear in the 1950 census living in separate locations and each is listed as divorced. Woodside While attending the football game at Boulder, Colo., Saturday afternoon, Forrest S. Woodside of Denver was stricken with a heart attack and died very suddenly. He had suffered a heart ailment earlier this year and was advised by doctors to take a much needed rest in a warmer climate and change of altitude. He and Mrs. Woodside went to Scottsdale, Ariz., in early spring and there he was stricken with a more serious heart condition and spent many weeks in a hospital. He recovered sufficiently to return to his Denver home in July and was recovering slowly but satisfactorily according to his medical advisors. The Woodside family resided in the vicinity eat of Arapahoe 53 years ago, leaving here in 1910 to live in Colorado. Forrest was nearly 65 years of age at the time of his death and he was president of the Woodside Lumber Co., in Wheat Ridge, Colo. The death of his father, W.S. Woodside, 97, occurred a month ago on August 21st. His mother passed away in September of 1950. Survivors are his wife, Mae; a son, Forrest Jr., of Topeka, Kans.; two grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; two sisters, Eva Woodside of Denver and Mildred Mitchell of Lamar, Colo. Relatives from Arapahoe attending the funeral service, which was held Wednesday morning in Denver, were: O.E. Tull, Mrs. R.F. Emmett and Mr. and Mrs. Roland Emmett.
