2809 | Mrs. Ira E. Parker Dead. No death of recent years has so shocked this community as that of Bertha M. Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gilmore, of this place, whose death was so sudden and the news so appalling to her host of friends. It is difficult to express the depth of feeling of the community on this occasion. Bertha was one of the most beautiful characters of life that the people of this vicinity have ever had the pleasure of knowing. To know her was to love her. Her remains were brought from Wichita hospital Saturday evening and taken to the home of her parents. Sunday, March 15, at 12:30 p.m., the G.A.R. and I.O.O.F. with their subordinate lodges met at the home and marched in a body to the church where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.J. Barron, her pastor, of South Haven, Kansas. His text for the occasion was Job 14:14, “If a man died, shall he live again.” Knowing her so well in life, he was able in his discourse to illustrate to the people a most beautiful example of Christian life. Following this service the W.R.C. performed their burial cemetery. The sons rendered by the choir were: “Asleep in Jesus,” “Beautiful Isle”, “Mary Father Knows” and “Refuge.” After the impressive services held at the church the body of the loved one was taken to the Fairview cemetery for interment. At the grave a short prayer was offered, followed by the beautiful burial services of the Rebekahs, after which the body of the beloved sister was lowered to its final resting place beneath the many beautiful floral offerings given by her friends as a last tribute of love and respect. Her work is ended; her Master has said, “It is enough come up higher.” The community extends its sincerest sympathy to the bereaved husband, parents, brothers and sisters in this sad hour of affliction. Those out of town who attended the funeral were: Miss Carrie Wooley of Nardin, Mrs. Katie James of Chase, Chas. James of Gage, Mrs. Logan Hedges and Mary Gilmore of Chase, Louis Gilmore of Wakita, Dudley Gilmore of Fredrick. Also a large crowd from Pond Creek. – Jefferson (Okla.) Review. 2835 | MRS. MARY E. IVINS Mary E. Glasco, wife of Rev. J. R. Ivins, of the Illinois Conference, was born by Presbyterian parentage at Mt. Sterling, Illinois, July 17th, 1868. She married Rev. J. R. Ivins, Dec. 24, 1890 and died at Camp Point, Illinois, May 18th, 1894. These dates represent only the outward life of one who lived so short a term of years. From her childhood she was taught the Bible and saw the beauty of a Christian life illustrated in her own home, and very early in life gave her heart to the Lord. Preferring the Methodist Episcopal Church, she connected herself with the society at Chapel Hill, on the Camden circuit in the summer of 1889, during the pastorate of her own bereaved husband. Her consecration was so entire and her experience so deep and clear, and her heart so trustful, that her life was a beautiful exhibition of loving service for the Master. At the marriage alter she gave herself to him who had won her affection and love, but cheerfully gave her life to the toil and labor of an itinerant's wife. During the year of 1893 her husband's health gave way under excessive labor and study, and at the conference at Clinton he took a supernumerary relation. In the winter of 1893 he went to Florida in hopes of regaining his health and strength. She remained at home, denying herself for his good that he might be able to again preach the gospel. During his absence, and while Brother Ivins was preaching in Florida, Mrs. Ivins became a mother, and died May 18th, a few hours before her husband reached his home. Mrs. Ivins possessed a beautiful Christian experience, not self reproachful nor boastful, but illustrating the beauty of life hid with Christ in God. She had an ardent desire to live to be a faithful wife, mother, and helper in the work of the Master, but she knew whom she believed and trusted, and when the end came it was closing the eyes on earth to open them in heaven. She was buried at Camp Point, Ill. Thus again we have been called to record the departure of nother of God's faithful handmaidens. | Glasgow, Mary E. (I844)
