2902 | NELSON -- Jerome H., died September 8, 2003, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was a longtime Tulsa businessman and volunteer with several community organizations and events. Known as "Jerry" to many friends, he was born in Summerfield, KS, on November 10, 1936. He joined the Army after graduating from Summerfield High School and later was honorably discharged. In 1956 Jerome began his professional career in Kansas City with Skelly Oil Company. He moved to Tulsa in 1963 and stayed with the company as it transitioned to Getty Oil Co. and Texaco. He was an Information Systems Manager when he retired in 1993. Jerome was a loving and devoted husband, father and mentor. He found his granddaughters, Nicole and Taylor to be the "light of his life." He was a kind, compassionate, caring person and devout Catholic. He taught his children to love and enjoy sports. He enjoyed a good laugh and the outdoors, especially fishing. He was an active community volunteer with his daughter, devoting many hours to Tulsa's annual Halloween parade, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Tulsa International Mayfest. Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and William H. Nelson and brother, William M. Nelson. Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Mary Anne of the home; his daughter, Sharon Nelson of Tulsa; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Becky Nelson of Tulsa; son, Kerry Nelson; and 2 beautiful granddaughters, Nicole and Taylor Nelson of Tulsa; also brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerold and Darlene Nelson of Liberty, MO, Norman and Diane Nelson of Raytown, MO, Jim and Sylvia Nelson of Breman, KS; sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and David Ayres of Downer's Grove, IL; sister-in-law, Ruth Nelson of Olathe, KS; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carol and Tony Tartol of Chicago, IL, Peggy and Norman Grajek of Crystal Lake, IL and John and Dorothy Brady of Chicago, IL; sister-in-law Ellie Cypert of Eureka Springs, Ark.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. 2903 | Nelson, Ruth Marie 89, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away August 14, 2009. Ruth was born in Valparasio, NE on January 22, 1920 to the late Rudolph and Marie Sklenar. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne E. Nelson and her brother, Rudolph Sklenar. Ruth had a brief career as a dental assistant in the town of Wahoo, NE, but spent most of her life being a homemaker. Ruth's greatest joys came from being a loving wife and mother to her children, providing a warm and nurturing home. She loved cooking, entertaining and gardening. Ruth moved frequently following her husband's career, living in Nebraska, St. Louis, MO, Prairie Village, KS, Bridgewater, NJ and Lenexa, KS, which felt most like home to her. Ruth moved to Scottsdale, AZ three years ago to be closer to family. She is survived by her sister, Irma Sklenar, of Lenexa; daughter, Jan Goetze (Bruce), of Scottsdale, and son, Dr. Ken Nelson (Helen) of Wichita. She is also survived by her much loved grandchildren, Brett Arthur (Diane), Laurie Boquist (Tim), Blake Nelson and Kate Nelson, three great grandchildren and many dear friends. Peter Friesen-Blank officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville. Mrs. Swift died Jan. 25, 2003, in her home. She was 63. She was born Feb. 12, 1939, in Dayton, the daughter of Glenn and Cassie Isabelle Nelson Patterson. She was raised and educated in Dayton and Carlton, attended McMinnville High School for two years, then attended and graduated from Dayton High School. She worked for U.S. National Bank from 1963 to 1995. She graduated from the American Institute of Banking in 1985. She and Robert Swift were married Sept. 13, 1990, in Newberg. She was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, Newberg. She belonged to the Newberg Chamber of Commerce, Parent Teacher Organization, Vintage Festival and the National Business Women's Association. Family members said she was devoted to her whole family and always willing to help others. She loved cooking, gardening, antiques and the beach. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ross Coleman of McMinnville and Donald Johnson of Eugene; three daughters, Roxane Coleman of Tigard, Cheryl Harrison of Eugene and Lori Fineman of Mill Valley, Calif.; her mother, C. Isabelle Trent of Dayton; a sister, Norma Staebler of Pendleton; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a twin brother, Donald Patterson. The Rev. Kent Harrop of First Baptist Church, McMinnville, will officiate. Interment will be in the mausoleum in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville. The funeral home will be open for visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Trent died Nov. 16, 1999, in Oakwood Country Place, McMinnville. He was 86. He was born April 22, 1913, in Powder Springs, Tenn., the son of John H. and Alice Bowers Trent. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1930. He worked for Birdseye Cannery in Hillsboro until 1942. He served in the Army in World War II from 1942 to 1945 as a messenger in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. After completing his military service, he helped run his parents' dairy farm in Cloverdale. He and Isabelle Patterson were married July 2, 1960, in Cloverdale. Mr. Trent farmed in Dayton from 1958 to 1973, when he retired. Survivors include his wife; two stepdaughters, Donnis Swift of Newberg and Norma Staebler of Pendleton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Shelburne; and two brothers, Everett Trent and Paul Trent. 2918 | Noble Stanley, an employee of the Santa Fe, fell from a truck on which he was standing while washing car windows, on Thursday night. Stanley was rendered unconscious by the fall, having struck back of his head and while he recovered consciousness within a short time it was necessary to carry him to his house. He died this morning and it is supposed that his death was due to the fall. He was a former resident to Agra, Okla., and the remains will be taken there for burial. 2920 | Norma M. Kern, 87, died July 16, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, surrounded by her family. Services will be Friday, July 22, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the M. J. Kirby Post of the American Legion in Blairstown, Iowa. The family will greet visitors at the Legion Hall beginning at 10:00, and a luncheon at the hall will follow a brief committal service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown. Cedar Memorial is providing assistance to the family. Norma Kern was born July 2, 1929, the youngest child of Roy and Margaret Myers Zigler. She married James F. Kern on January 9, 1949 in Blairstown where they made their home until retiring to Marengo, then Mesa, AZ in 1987. Norma worked at Amana, Armstrong’s, and Marengo Hospital, but she was best known for easily making friends, her ceramics and crafts, her sense of humor, and for her baking and sharing of cookies, cakes, brownies, and other sweet treats. Her favorite moments were spent with family, playing bingo, and visiting the casino. Surviving are her son, James Kern, and two daughters, Deborah Toy and Susan Ellenberger, all of Cedar Rapids; granddaughters Tara (Rich) Hall, Frea (Graeme) Errington, Trina Savard, and Amanda Ellenberger; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Jayne Roth and Jo Ann Fiester of Blairstown; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings, and three sons-in-law. The family is grateful to Hospice of Mercy for their generous and compassionate assistance in Norma’s final months. 2921 | Norman E. Libby Norman E. Libby, 60, of 2314 S. Dellrose, co-owner of Service Iron Foundry, 330 N. Rock Island, died Saturday. He was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Boston, Mass. He moved to Wichita in 1923 from Zenda, Kan., and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Annabelle, of the home; a son, Edmond, Wichita; three daughters, Mrs. Norma Ann Higgins, Pinedale, Wyo., Ruth Elaine Libby and Joy Lynn Libby, both of the home; and three sisters, Mrs. May H. 2922 | Norman Nelson was born in the small farming community of Summerfield, Kan., on December 15, 1938, to William and Esther (Whelan) Nelson, who both preceded him in death. Norman was the fourth oldest of six children. He married Diane Walker of Clinton, Oklahoma on February 8, 1964, at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas City, Mo. They had two sons - Michael and Gary. At Summerfield High School, Norman played both football and basketball. After his graduation in 1956, he entered the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he served at several military installations around the United States, as well as serving a tour of duty in Korea. Receiving an honorable discharge in September, 1959, he returned home to Summerfield. Eventually, Norman arrived in Kansas City, Mo., seeking a new career. He was hired as a Patrolman by the Kansas City Police Department. Norman completed the Police Academy in April 1960. He held many positions with the Department over his 28-year career. The last positions he held were as helicopter observer and pilot, positions he held from 1970 until his retirement in 1988. Not content to retire, he undertook a second career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City as a Senior Protection Officer. Norman worked for the Federal Reserve from 1988 until his second retirement in 2003. Having completed two careers, he enjoyed devoting more time to hunting, fishing and watching Jayhawk basketball. Norman is survived by Diane, his wife of 43 years; Michael and Sandy Nelson of Peculiar, Mo.; Gary and Angela Nelson of Holts Summit, Mo.; six grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, and 13 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tues., Jan. 16, at Sheil Colonial Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St.; burial to follow at Brooking Cemetery. Visitation will be Mon., Jan. 15, from 6-8 p.m. at Sheil Colonial Chapel. 2934 | Notes from Find a Grave: Robert Hamilton GLASGOW, is the 7th born & 5th Son of Alexander GLASGOW & Mother: Sarah TAGGART. He was "murdered by gang members" at the age of age 20yrs, 4mths, & 13 days, in Yellow Springs Twp., Des Moines Co., Iowa. Robert H. GLASGOW, was murdered, A group of boys in the neighborhood became involved in stealing, it began with chickens to roast, then to pigs, hiding them in a cave and selling them. Robert H. GLASGOW was involved but was determined to break with the gang. The others were afraid that he would reveal to authorities what he knew of the evil which had been going on. He was apparently confronted by the boys, near some hay stacks along the creek west of the Rock Bottom schoolhouse. His body was found there and he was buried in Sharon Cemetery. After Mr. James HENDERSON found a club covered with blood, John C. GLASGOW, (brother of Robert) doubted his alleged accidental death and insisted the body be disinterred. One member of the gang was present and was trembling continually and when the body was produced, examined and a skull fracture was discovered, the fellow confessed. One daughter, Myrtle preceded her in death. surviving besides her husband are Mrs. Floy volle, Arlie G., Lester F., and Mrs. Audrey Fisher of Beatrice. Mrs. Ruth Fisher of Chico, California and Leslie N. of Seattle, Washington, a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Moon of Chico, California, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. Her mother and father, one sister and one brother also preceded her in death. she was a kind and loving friend to all. 2945 | Nova B. Carroll Dies After Brief Illness Nova B. Carroll, 74, McCook pharmacist, died early Sunday morning at his home there after a brief illness. He had worked as was usual on Saturday at the Prest Drug Company and after going home in the evening became ill and medical aid was summoned. After midnight he became more critically ill and passed away as ambulance attendants were preparing to take him to the hospital. Funeral services were held at the McCook Memorial Methodist church Wednesday morning and interment was in the Arapahoe cemetery beside his wife, the former Viola Tull, who died June 29, 1961. Nov Carroll was born and raised in the Cambridge community. About 1012-14 he was employed as a registered pharmacist at the Arapahoe drug store and will be remembered by many. He was a well-known baseball player and was the catcher for an excellent team which Arapahoe fielded in those years. Later Mr. Carroll operated drug stores at Hampton, Funk, Edison and Danbury, but had been for many years employed at McCook. He is survived by three sons: Richard J. of Pueblo, Colo., Bill D. of Sioux City, Ia., and Jack of Sunnyvale, Calif.; nine grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters. 2950 | Obituary (contributed) Clara Nighswonger was born at Viola, Kansas, Oct. 18, 1889, and died at Blackfoot Jan. 10, 1917, aged 17 years 2 months, 22 days. She was united to Troy Cox in this city, Nov. 23, 1916. This happy home was soon overshadowed with affliction, and after a brief illness, the physicians and nurses with the loved ones did all that could be done, death came to relieve her from suffering. At an early age she was converted and united with the Baptist church in Kansas. She lived a beautiful Christian life until her death is the testimony of those who knew her well. She leaves to mourn her death, a husband, father and mother, six brothers and four sisters and many friends here and elsewhere. The funeral services over the remains of the late Mrs. Roy Cox were held at the M.E. Church last Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large congregation of mourning friends. Rev. C.P.
