| 501 | Ethel M. (St. Bonnett) Bearce, 89, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Kingswood Health Center. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, in Westminster Hall at Kingswood Senior Living Community, 10000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64114, with the funeral following at 11 a.m. Her ashes will be scattered in the Rose Garden at Unity Village. Ethel was born on November 18, 1919, in Allen, Kan., to Frank and Florence (Spencer) St. Bonnett. While Ethel worked a number of jobs throughout her life, her primary job and love was as homemaker raising her three children. Ethel was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was active in a variety of service organizations. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Joyce Merideth of Kansas City; son, Charles and wife Jerri of Orem, Utah; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, James Francis Bearce; daughter, Judith Ann Hancock Shafer; her parents; identical twin sister; and brother. | 502 | Ethel Walsh to be buried this morning Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel McKeown Walsh will be held at 9:30 a.m. today (Thursday) at Mahoney’s Chapel, the Rev. Jay Spurlin officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. Walsh passed away at her home, 523 South Silver, Monday morning. She was born June 4, 1874 in Van Buren County, Iowa, and had been a Deming resident for 58 years. Mrs. Walsh was a member of the Sunshine Thrift Club. She was married to James L. Walsh, who precede her in death in 1937. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Lena Billingslea, Baldwin Park, Calif., Mrs. Rose Pfefferkorn, Bolinas, Calif., Mrs. Mildred Middleton and Mrs. Jean Schultz, both of Deming; one sister, Mrs. Rose Bausch, Redwood City, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. | 504 | EUNICE ELIZABETH BEARCE Eunice Elizabeth Bearce, 93, of Independence, MO passed from this life on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in the Rosewood Health Center. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, MO. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11:00 a.m. Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Groves Community Hospice. Eunice Elizabeth Blair was born March 10, 1916 in Rueter, MO to Preston and Buelah (Reuter) Blair. She married Edward Curtis, Jr. on February 16, 1939. In 1943 they moved from their farm in Taney County to Kansas City, Missouri, where Eunice lived for many years. After the birth of their son, then later the death of her husband Ed in 1947, she was employed for several years during the War, at Pratt & Whitney, then worked for the IRS. On July 16, 1953 Eunice married Harold Bearce. Eunice was an active member of the Community of Christ, Meyer Boulevard congregation, and later the Grandview congregation. After the death of her husband Harold in 1986, Eunice remained in Kansas City for several years, then moved to Independence, Missouri. Eunice had a sparkle in her eye and a sense of humor that wouldn't quit. She enjoyed traveling with friends and visiting with family. Her creativity was evident in many things; whether it be cooking, sewing, restoring antiques, needlework, or crafts, she excelled, and many benefited from it. Walking was her favorite exercise, and friends and family were her favorite pastime. Her greatest joy was her son and his family, the two grandchildren holding an extra-special place in her heart. She is survived by her son Blair Curtis and his wife Martha of Atlanta, GA; her stepson Harold Bearce and his wife Rosalee of Topeka, KS; her grandson Preston Curtis, granddaughter Brittney Curtis; a sister Helen Maggard and husband Burl of Bradleyville, MO. | 505 | Evelyn L. McKeown, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 15, 2005, at her residence. Memorial services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Clair L. Boes of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley, Iowa, officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Evie was born Feb. 1, 1930, in West Point, Iowa, to Clem and Agnes Winnike. She lived with her family on a farm near West Point until the age of 18. After she graduated from high school, she moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where she met her dear husband, Roger McKeown. They married June 15, 1951. From this marriage came three children. In 1972, she started a successful career for the Sioux City School System. She started at Central High School, then moved to North High School. At North High, she was the secretary to the student counselors. In 1992, she retired from North High and started her second career, traveling and being a grandmother. In her retirement years, she traveled many places throughout the world. But her favorite place was Sioux City. She is survived by her children, Christine McKeown and Kenny Ludwig, Tracy McKeown and Patrick and Leatha McKeown; grandchildren, Claire and Tilly; her siblings, Marcy McKinley, Genny Winnike, Ceny Gintz, Ray and Mary Winnike, Lee Winnike and Mary and Bill Cosselman; and many nieces and nephews. | 509 | Evelyn Mary Bohrofen was born March 20, 1920 in Morning Sun, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Ola(Harris)Baird. She graduated from Morning Sun High School and received cosmetology training. She lived in California for a couple of years and then moved to Keota in the early 1940's. On January 21, 1945 Evelyn was united in marriage to Dennis Bohrofen at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. She worked as a beautician for 35 years, and ran Evelyn's Beauty Shop in Keota for many years, retiring in 1973. In 1996 Evelyn and Dennis moved to Wellman. She was a past member of TTT. She enjoyed spending time with her family, boating, being on the water, and she loved her cats. Evelyn died on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Windmill Manor in Coralville at the age of 95 years. Evelyn is survived by a son Monte Bohrofen and wife Judy of Clive; a daughter Tracy Bohrofen and husband Kent Behrens of Omaha, Nebraska; and a sister Marian Haney of Mediapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dennis, and a sister Leora Jackson. A private graveside service will be at a later date in the St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Cremation was planned by Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, with burial of ashes at sea. She died Sunday in a hospital. Mrs. Holmes was born in Los Angeles and lived in the county 39 years. She was a retired legal secretary and a member of the San Diego Legal Secretaries Association and served as its president in 1956-57. She was active in the church. | 512 | Everett Bedford Dies on Saturday Everett Bedford, 62 years old, since 1900 a resident of Colorado, died at about 1:15 Saturday morning at the Greeley hospital, following a major operation Tuesday at the hospital. Mr. Bedford, a native of Quinter Kan., was born Oct. 16, 1890. I came to Colorado in 1900 and had lived in the vicinity of Greeley most of the time since. He had been engaged in construction work in Wyoming and Colorado, the past year in Wyoming. He was associated in business with H.J. Woodman. Mr. Bedford was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rose Bell Bedford of 1321 Eleventh avenue, and by five children, Jack 15, Stewart 12, Marjorie 9, Donald 7 and Richard 6. He is survived also by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Bedford Gish of Kingman, Kan.; Bessie Bedford of Blanchard, Ia.; and be a brother, Merton Bedford, of Santa Barbara, Calif. He attended county grade schools and graduated from the Riley Rural High School. He was a farmer, auctioneer, and heavy equipment operator for more than 50 years. He married Ruth A. Porter on Oct. 10, 1948. She died Feb. 18, 1999. Survivors are one daughter, Sharlyn Ada, La Verne, Cal.; two sons, Mary Say, Emporia and Gary Say, Spearfish, S.D.; and two grandchildren. Krumme, 79, 2418 Schoenheit Street, died at Falls City Community Hospital this morning, Monday, Dec. 9, 1991, at 2:45. Mr. Krumme had been in failing health the past three months. He entered the hospital for the last time on Dec. 5. Born April 22, 1912, at Arapahoe, he was son of the late August Krumme and Minnie Tagemier Krumme. He was raised at Arapahoe and graduated from Arapahoe High School. Mr. Krumme worked with his father and two brothers, William and Elmer, in building construction. Following his father's retirement, they continued the business together for several years. They had built several churches in Nebraska and Kansas and took the contract to build the Christ Lutheran Church here. After taking the contract for the church, Mr. Krumme moved here, continuing with his Krumme Construction Company. He later built the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Falls City, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, southeast of Verdon, and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Sacred Heart School, Falls City. He had also built many homes in Falls City. After being here for a few years, Mr. Krumme purchased the Independent Lumber Company, which became the Krumme Building and Supply Company, now operated as Sailors' Building Supply and Construction. Together with the building supply business, he also operated a Red-D-Mix supply plant in Falls City. Mr. Krumme retired in 1981 when he sold the building supply business. Mr. Krumme served in the United States Navy during World War II as an officer in the Seabees in the South Pacific. He was married to Itha Tull on March 22, 1944, at Arapahoe. The couple moved to Falls City in 1954 from Fairbury. She died on Nov. 8, 1988. On May 27, 1989, he was married to Margie Zimmerman Steinman at the Zion Lutheran Church of Christ, 8-1/2 miles northeast. Mr. Krumme was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Falls City Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post No. 102, VFW Post No. 1765 and BPO Elks Lodge No. 963. Survivors include his wife, Margie, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Teri) O'Grady, Falls City, and Myra Krumme, Omaha; three stepsons, Edward Steinman, Elizabeth, Colo., John Steinman, Falls City, and Steven Steinman, Kansas City, Mo.; six stepdaughters, Mrs. Darrel (Elizabeth) Huettner, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Reavis and Mrs. Gary (Linda) Jones, Falls City, Mrs. LeRoy "Bud" (Ruth) Driever, Nebraska City, Mrs. Phillip (Judith) Page, Florissant, Mo., and Mrs. Charles (Betty) Maze, Hiawatha; two brothers, William Krumme and Elmer Krumme, Fairbury; one sister, Hertha Bamford, Ventura, Calif.; four grandchildren, and 20 step-grandchildren. | 517 | Famed watercolor artist Millard Sheets, 81 Associated Press Gualala, Mendocino Co. – Millard Owen Sheets, a well-known artist who helped develop the California school of watercolor, died at his home on the Mendocino coast. He was 81. Mr. Sheets, who had been ill for several years before his death Friday, was a painter and muralist recognized for his evocative landscapes. His work hangs in 46 museums in 15 states nationwide. Since he began his career at age 16 with an exhibit at the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1923, Mr. Sheets has made an imprint in the art world with more than 100 murals and mosaics and has designed about 100 buildings. Mr. Sheets, who graduated in 1939 frpm the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles, served as professor art, then chairman of the art department, at Scripps College in Claremont for 26 years. Mr. Sheets, who also served as director of the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1950-56, had several books published and worked as a war correspondent for Life Magazine in the India- Burma war from 1943-44. In the early 1960s, Mr. Sheets traveled to Turkey and the Soviet Union as an art specialist for the U.S. State Department. His works include “Christ the Teacher” on the library tower at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., 1964; mosaics for the Dome of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the National Shrine in Washington, D.C., 1969; mosaic façade at the Detroit Public Library, 1960; and two tile murals-façade in the Los Angeles City Hall, 1972. One of his final works was a large painted mural for the Civic Center in Lubbock, Texas. Mr. Sheets had one-man art shows in Milch Galleries, New York, 1935-36, London Gallery of Arthur Tooth and Sone, 1964; Monterey, Mexico, 1971; Kennedy Galleries, new York 1978, ’80, ’82; and a retrospective show at the Stary-Sheets Art Gallery in his hometown of Gualala in 1987. Mr. Sheets’ published books include “West African Journal’, 1980; and “Your Drawing is a Measure of Your Mind, “ 1983. A 1983 biography, “Millard Sheets” One Man Renaissance,” was written by Janice Lovoos. | 518 | Farm Agent’s Wife Dead Mrs. Cassie Adelle Smith, 41, of Stillwater, wife of County Agent Lester Smith, died Friday in Stillwater Municipal hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services under direction of Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater, are pending. Born Aug. 28, 1920, in Avery, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy McKeown. She was married to Lester Smith Jan. 1, 1942, in Cushing. They had been residents of Stillwater since 1956. She was a member of the First Christian church of Stillwater. | 519 | Farm Youth Killed by Lightning Bolt Two Other Knocked Unconscious During Storm Late Monday Billings – Irvin Bellmon, 17-year-old farm youth, was killed and two of his companions knocked unconscious by lightning Monday afternoon when it struck the barn on the Pete Lively farm, eight miles southeast of here. Lively, only of the group, received serious burns on the side. Linely Casebier, the third member of the group, was not injured. A pulmotor squad from Perry was called but efforts to revive Bellmon failed. The three had been threshing during the day. When the rainstorm started, they sought shelter in the barn. They were discovered by other threshers after the lightning struck. Bellmon lived on a farm a mile north of the Lively place with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Bellmon. He was graduated from the Billings high school this spring and was a junior master farmer. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Henry, Sheldon and Randall, all of the home place; two half-brothers and six half-sisters. West Temple, who was electrocuted Tuesday while at work on the new veterans’ hospital at Fort Douglas, will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at 36 E. 7th South. Mr. Fay was killed when a boom hoist swung into a high tension power line, sending an electrical charge through to a cement bucket supported by the hoist and which Mr. Fay was holding. | 523 | Faye Abigail Nelson Little Faye Little, 100, passed away Sept. 26, 2007. She was born to James Calvin and Emma Rosetta Nelson, in Liberty, NE, November 1, 1906. Faye graduated from Sterling College, Sterling, KS, in 1930, and did post graduate work at the University of Nebraska, earning her a teaching certificate. She met her husband of 69 years, the late Professor J. Kenneth Little, while attending Sterling College, and was married June 14, 1930. Faye taught elementary and junior high school classes in Madison, WI, where she resided for 35 years. Faye was active in many civic functions in Madison, including serving as President of the Madison Civics Club, West Side Garden Club, and PTA. She was also very active in voluntary work with the American Red Cross, and participated in many University of Wisconsin faculty wives' functions and church activities. Faye's interests included flower arranging (a long-term member of Ikebana) and sewing. She was also an avid Bridge player. Faye and her husband retired to Walnut Creek, CA in 1970, where she became very active teaching sewing to members of the Rossmoor Retirement Community. During her retirement years, she cultivated her interest in swimming, managing to swim fifty miles for the American Red Cross. After her husband passed on, Faye moved to Vancouver, WA, where she resided at the Bedford for three years, and Highgate Senior Living for four years. Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, and her son, Kenneth (Elaine) of Davis, CA. She is survived by her son, Philip (Colleen) Little of Lyons, KS; daughter, Connie Sebek of Vancouver, WA; grandchildren: Kristin Little (Tore Olsen) of Washington D.C., James B. The Rev. Frank W. Leeper officiated. Burial was in the Mission Creek, Neb., cemetery. Mrs. Frazee was born in Liberty, Neb., Feb. 7, 1908, the daughter of Hugh Gardner Nelson and Ida Dugan Nelson. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1927, attended Peru State Teachers College, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Washburn University. Her education was concentrated in the field of elementary education. She taught school in Summerfield, Kan., Diller, Neb., and was a substitute teacher in the Riverton school system. She was a lifetime member of the Summerfield chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of Shenandoah United Presbyterian Church. On July 28, 1937, she and John Howard Frazee wed. They had two children, Willian Hugh and Rosalee Elaine. Mrs. Frazee was preceded in death by her son, William Hugh and husband. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Rosalee) Bloomfield; and granddaughters, Ingrid Lea and Mary Frances Bloomfield, all of Uniondale, N.Y.; one sister, Alice Hasenyager of Kansas City, Mo.; and three brothers, Arlo Nelson and Willian Nelson, both of Marysville, and Wayne Nelson of Sommerville, N.J. | 531 | Floretta Bellmon, 81, of Red Rock, Okla., was born March 9, 1925, to John Henry and Mannie Lee (Bright) Reichert of rural El Reno. She left this earth on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006. Floretta completed elementary school at rural Okarche and graduated salutatorian from Calumet High School. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Central State College. Her postgraduate studies were at Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. She taught at John Adams Elementary School in Oklahoma City before moving to Montana where she taught at the public schools, The College of Great Falls and Malmstrom Air Force Base. When she returned to Oklahoma, she was the supervisor of the girls dormitory at Concho Indian School. Floretta concluded a long teaching career in 1993 at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa where she taught for 22 years. She enjoyed traveling, ceramics and spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Bellmon was a member of Ceres Christian Church. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at First Christian Church in Perry with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. Interment was in the Union Cemetery at Billings. Services were under direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home of Perry. | 536 | Former Resident Dies at Hasting Arapahoe – Edyth L. Tull, 77, died Friday at the Good Samaratan Village in Hasting, where she had been a resident for nearly two years. Born in Iowa, she had spent most of her life in this community and is perhaps best remembered by many for her services as an operator for the Arapahoe Telephone Co. She was an operator for nearly 50 years and had served in various exchanges in the state before joining the Arapahoe firm. In failing health for quite some time, she was some improved and able to be about until receiving a broken hip in a fall last September, with resultant complications. He died November 8 and had been ill since April. Mr. Daniels was born on April 28, 1885, in Chatfield, Minn. And came to Noble county, Okla., in 1897. He was married to Avis McKeown, November 30, 1907. His survived by his wife and one son, Cecil and two grandsons of Perry. Services were held at 10 a.m. in the Parker Chapel. The obituary: Emma Zella, daughter of William J. and Hannah McKeown Crawford was born near Morning Sun, Iowa, Dec. 3, 1877, and departed this life Sept. 2, 1948, at the age of 70 years and 9 months. When she was seven years old she moved with her parents to Nuckolls county, Nebraska. At an early age she united with Beulah Reformed Presbyterian church. She resided in the community until her marriage to Charles E. Moranville, June 10, 1914. They established their home in Hemingford, Nebr. To this union were born four children. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Esther. Those who mourn here passing are Charles of Sterling, Colo., Walter of Denver Colo., and Ruth Tjaden of Madrid, Nebr., ; also two brothers, one sister and five grandchildren, and very many other relatives and friends. | 539 | Former Resident, 81 Years Old, Dies in Hospital Mrs. Carrie Glasgow, who lived in Normal from 1910 until 1942, died Monday morning at Our Saviour’s hospital, Jacksonville, where she had been a patient since August 1944, according to word received in Normal Monday. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Jacksonville. Mrs. Glasgow, who was 81 years old, lived at 204 North Fell avenue for many years before leaving Normal in 1942. She was the youngest and last survivor of a family of eight, having been born Jan. 20, 1864, during the Civil war. Her father was born during the War of 1812 and her grandfather during the Revolutionary war. In 1891 she was married to the Rev. S.A. Glasgow, minister of the Presbyterian church in Woodson, Ill. Mr. Glasgow died in 1908. The Glasgows had four children, two of whom survive, Lt. Arthur Glasgow, of San Diego, Calif., who recently returned from 18 months in the southwest Pacific as a chaplain in the navy, and James Glasgow, who teaches geography at Michigan state Normal school, Ypsilanti, Mich., and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also survived by three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Glasgow was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Normal until she moved to Ypsilanti several years ago.
