Richard Gustafson
Services for Richard C. Gustafson, 69, of 2603 17th St., Rock Island, are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he was a lifetime member. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park.
Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorial may be made to the church or American Cancer Society.
Mr. Gustafson died Monday, May 15, 1995, at home.
He was born June 30, 1925, in Moline, the son of Carl W. and Gerda S. Alexanderson/Carlson Gustafson. He married Kathryn V. Gardner Feb. 20, 1948, in Milan.
He was employed as a journeyman pressman in the reproduction department at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island, retiring in 1987 after 20 years. In earlier years he worked 19 years at the former Augustana Book Concern, Rock Island. He was also a custodian at First Lutheran Church after the death of his father.
He was a member of the church’s bowling team and in earlier years in the softball and basketball teams and was a church usher. He was past president of Valley Little League, Rock Island, and had been a little League coach. He also had officiated high school basketball and football games and umpired baseball. He was a former member of Rock Island Golden K Kiwanis Club.
He was a World War II Navy veteran.
He enjoyed singing, bicycling, gardening, water jogging, playing tennis and all sports. He was widely known for giving out candy to children and friends.
Survivors include the widow; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Kirk Witherspoon, Moline, and Susan and Dan Rogers, Geneseo; sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard A., John K. and Rita, and William H. Gustafson, all of Rock Island, and Donald A Gustafson, Milan; grandchildren, Stuart, Dawn, Gwen, Stephanie, Tom, Erika, Alexis and Asta; and a brother, Dale R. Gustafson, Summerfield, Fla.
