  • Notes
    • Mrs. James Kennedy died suddenly at her home near Garland station, Iowa, Thursday morning, November 2d (1911), at 6 o'clock. She had been ill for two months, and about four weeks ago was taken to Chicago, where she underwent an operation. She was brought home Monday evening of last week, and appeared to be regaining her health. Her death was a great shock to all the friends, as it was entirely unexpected.

The funeral was held from the Kennedy home Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by her pastor Reverend E. L. McKnight, and interment was made in the Sharon cemetery. A very large gathering of friends attended the funeral exercises.

Mrs. Kennedy, née Martha Creelman, was born in Ireland, County Derry, March 3, 1847.

In company with a brother she immigrated to America, landing in New York October 20th, 1866.

Her marriage to James Kennedy took place January 3, 1867. To this union were born three sons, George, Robert and Renwick, and four daughters, Mrs. Frank Hays, Mrs. Will McElhinney, Mrs. W. W. Caldwell and Miss Ruby, all of whom are living, as is also Mr. Kennedy.

The Kennedy family removed from New York in 1870 and located near Kossuth, Iowa, where they lived until 1883. They have lived on the farm they now occupy for 15 years.

Mrs. Kennedy was a life member of the Covenanter church and had been for over 28 years connected with the Sharon congregation. She was of the kindest of neighbors, of the sincerest of friends, of the best of mothers, of the choicest of Christians. "She rests from her labours, and her works do follow her."
