Notes - John Skirlo Walkinshaw, long-time Douglas resident, died August 21, 1978 following a short illness. He was born Nov. 9, 1909 at Nelson, Nebraska, the son of Lennie Walkinshaw and William J. Walkinshaw. Skirlo graduated from Nelson, Nebraska High School and attended Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas for three years and graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Fall, Pennsylvania in 1931 with a B.S. degree. He married Elisabeth Moore on Dec. 31, 1937 at Lisbon, New York and to this union were born three children, David Skirlo, of Mesa, Arizona; Jonathan Moore of Douglas and Arvilla Copeland of North Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Walkinshaw began teaching in Converse County schools in 1932 at the old Laramie View School northeast of Douglas. He later taught in rural schools for five years before moving into Douglas where he taught at the high school level until he retired in 1975. During the last few years of teaching, he taught grandchildren of some of the students whom he had instructed when he first began his teaching career. Walkinshaw served in the United States Army from August of 1943 until October of 1945 and spent a total of 20 months in the European Theatre. He served with combat engineers in General Patton's Third Army and received an honorable discharge.
