Obituary: - Bertha Marzette Gilmore was [born] at Leroy, McLean county, Ill., November 27, 1872, and died March 12, 1908, at the Wichita Hospital, Wichita, Kansas, aged 35 years, 3 months and 15 days.
Her parents moved to Rice county, Kansas, in 1879 where her girlhood days were spent.
After completing the studies of the common schools she taught two terms in her home county. She then took two terms in the State Normal at Emporia, Kansas, after which she joined her parents at Jefferson, Oklahoma, they having moved in the meantime. In the fall of 1898 she began teaching in the primary department of the public schools of Jefferson and taught seven successive years. In the year 1905 she, with her husband, moved to South Haven, Sumner county, Kansas.
She was married to Ira E. Parker at the home of her brother, Dudley Gilmore, near Clyde, Oklahoma, August 13, 1903. There was born to this union two children, the first in September 1906, which lived only a few day, the second at the time of her death.
She was a member of the N.P. Banks Relief Corps No.41; also she and her husband were charter members of the Rebekah Degree of the I.O.O.F., being active in both societies during their residence here.
Mrs. Parker was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Chase, Kansas, at the age of 14. From there her membership was transferred to Jefferson, thence to South Haven, Kansas. She lived a beautiful Christian life, impressing all who knew her with the deep sincerity of her devotion. She was called to her reward without warning and without a great deal of suffering.
She leaves to mourn for her, her husband, and parents, Samuel and Jennie Gilmore, three sisters and two brothers, all of whom were at the funeral service.

    • Mrs. Ira E. Parker Dead.
No death of recent years has so shocked this community as that of Bertha M. Parker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gilmore, of this place, whose death was so sudden and the news so appalling to her host of friends. It is difficult to express the depth of feeling of the community on this occasion.
Bertha was one of the most beautiful characters of life that the people of this vicinity have ever had the pleasure of knowing. To know her was to love her.
Her remains were brought from Wichita hospital Saturday evening and taken to the home of her parents. Sunday, March 15, at 12:30 p.m., the G.A.R. and I.O.O.F. with their subordinate lodges met at the home and marched in a body to the church where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.J. Barron, her pastor, of South Haven, Kansas. His text for the occasion was Job 14:14, “If a man died, shall he live again.” Knowing her so well in life, he was able in his discourse to illustrate to the people a most beautiful example of Christian life. Following this service the W.R.C. performed their burial cemetery.
The sons rendered by the choir were: “Asleep in Jesus,” “Beautiful Isle”, “Mary Father Knows” and “Refuge.”
After the impressive services held at the church the body of the loved one was taken to the Fairview cemetery for interment. At the grave a short prayer was offered, followed by the beautiful burial services of the Rebekahs, after which the body of the beloved sister was lowered to its final resting place beneath the many beautiful floral offerings given by her friends as a last tribute of love and respect. Her work is ended; her Master has said, “It is enough come up higher.”
The community extends its sincerest sympathy to the bereaved husband, parents, brothers and sisters in this sad hour of affliction.
Those out of town who attended the funeral were: Miss Carrie Wooley of Nardin, Mrs. Katie James of Chase, Chas. James of Gage, Mrs. Logan Hedges and Mary Gilmore of Chase, Louis Gilmore of Wakita, Dudley Gilmore of Fredrick. Also a large crowd from Pond Creek. – Jefferson (Okla.) Review.
