Notes - McKEOWN's HOMEPLACE, Harlan Twp., Page Co., IA.
By Phyllis (Dunn) Fulk, 1996, Pg177
"Covenanter Cemetery Families"
Note by Phyllis Fulk:
In early 1940 on the way to Covenanter Church one Sabbath morning, my mother noticed machinery lined up as for sale on the Henry McKEOWN farm. She told Dad he should check and see if the farm was for sale. He did, and sold a team of horses for down payment. We lived south of Shambaugh and half way to College Springs, quite aways from church and Clarinda. There was Mom and Dad, six of us children, Grandpa and Grandma Dunn, so what a thrill to move to the McKEOWN place with four bedrooms upstairs and one down. A wood (or coal) burning furnace in the basement with a register to every room. A large porch across the south and east sides of the house. A beautiful staircase and large rooms with a big bay window out of the dining room and also the bedroom upstairs. There was no electricity or bath in the bathroom (no one else had that either) but there was water in and out of the kitchen. A huge crock sat beside the sink and if you pumped the pump (down hill east af the house) 300 times it would fill and have plenty of water to use. The water was piped out of the sink and ran down into the lower front yard. There was a house just back of the main house with two rooms which we called "the old house" and used for storage and the cream separator, where the Alex McKEOWNS had lived, it may have been attached to the house at one time. The Dunn family lived on the McKEOWN farm for twenty-five years. In 1947 electricity came to the country and a good hard surfaced "oiled" road was made to the church.
