    John Skirlo Walkinshaw, long-time Douglas resident, died August 21, 1978 following a short illness. He was born Nov. 9, 1909 at Nelson, Nebraska, the son of Lennie Walkinshaw and William J. Walkinshaw. Skirlo graduated from Nelson, Nebraska High School and attended Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas for three years and graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Fall, Pennsylvania in 1931 with a B.S. degree. He married Elisabeth Moore on Dec. 31, 1937 at Lisbon, New York and to this union were born three children, David Skirlo, of Mesa, Arizona; Jonathan Moore of Douglas and Arvilla Copeland of North Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Walkinshaw began teaching in Converse County schools in 1932 at the old Laramie View School northeast of Douglas. He later taught in rural schools for five years before moving into Douglas where he taught at the high school level until he retired in 1975. During the last few years of teaching, he taught grandchildren of some of the students whom he had instructed when he first began his teaching career. Walkinshaw served in the United States Army from August of 1943 until October of 1945 and spent a total of 20 months in the European Theatre. He served with combat engineers in General Patton's Third Army and received an honorable discharge.     Former Nuckolls County resident Arvilla Estella (Walkinshaw) Copeland, 85, of Lenexa, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at her home.

    Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Shawnee, Kan. Burial is 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is 2-3 p.m.
    Wednesday at the church.

    Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of local arrangements.

    Mrs. Copeland was born March 7, 1914, to William J. and Lennie (Skirlo) Walkinshaw in Nuckolls County.

    She grew up in the Nuckolls County area. She married Wilbur C. Copeland. She was a teacher and public speaker for many years for public and Christian schools in Superior; Fairfield; Hebron; Clarinda, Iowa; Haxtun, Colo.; and Shawnee. She also was a published writer.

    She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

    Survivors are her husband; three sons, Robert M. of Beaver Falls, Pa., Stanley R. of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.,
    and Stephen D. of Columbus, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

    Memorials may be given to the English department at Beaver
    County Christian School, 510 37th St.,
    Beaver Falls, PA 15010.
