Skirlo graduated from Nelson, Nebraska High School and attended Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas for three years and graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Fall, Pennsylvania in 1931 with a B.S. degree. He later taught in rural schools for five years before moving into Douglas where he taught at the high school level until he retired in 1975. During the last few years of teaching, he taught grandchildren of some of the students whom he had instructed when he first began his teaching career. Walkinshaw served in the United States Army from August of 1943 until October of 1945 and spent a total of 20 months in the European Theatre. He served with combat engineers in General Patton's Third Army and received an honorable discharge.
