    Robert James Carhoff, 65, of Sperry, died at 12:36 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

    Born Jan. 17, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert Lee and Betty Jane Boyle Carhoff. On June 22, 1973, he married Marilyn McKeown.

    Mr. Carhoff worked as an engineer for the city of Burlington. He was a graduate of Danville High School and earned an engineering degree at University of Iowa. He was a member of the Army Honor Guard and served as a civil engineer in Germany from 1967 to 1969. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of Moose Lodge 579, Cotillion Club, Eastern Iowa Polka Club and American Public Works Association. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, woodworking and tending his livestock and orchard.

    Survivors include his wife; three sons, Benjamin Allen Carhoff of Coralville, Andrew Robert Carhoff of Mediapolis and Nathan Edward Carhoff of Ankeny; four grandchildren; three brothers, William Carhoff of Gastonia, N.C., John Carhoff of Cedar Rapids and James Carhoff of Burlington; three sisters, Rebecca Smith of West Burlington, Naomi Lipper of New London and Suellen Schleisman of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.

    The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington.

    The graveside service with military rites for Mr. Carhoff will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Old Stone Cemetery with the Rev. David Steinle officiating.

    A memorial has been established.
