Memoir of Mrs. John G. McKeown. Mrs. Annie Parker McKeown died at her house north of Mediapolis, Iowa, March 6, 1892, at 12:55 P.M. She was born near Rathfriland, County of Down, Ireland, May 21, 1829, and come with her parents, John and Margaret Parker, to Rochester, New York and then to Zanesville, Ohio, where they resided until 1847, when they came to Des Moines County. She made a profession of faith and was received in Sharon (Reformed Presbyterian) congregation in 1848 and remained a consistent member until her death. She was united in marriage to John G. McKeown, Feb. 27, 1849, and was a devoted wife and mother. Twelve children were born to them. Three preceded her to the Realm of Light, and nine remain to mourn the loss of a loving, faithful mother. She had been a sufferer with creeping paralysis for some time. It had weakened her so much that she was not able to resist an attack of la grippe that seized her Jan 20, from which time she was unable to help herself, but in all her sufferings she was very patient, and able to say the Lord's will be done. She was conscious to the last, and peacefully passed away . She was ready and waiting for the summons, to enter into that Heavenly home, "an house not made with hand."

    M. PARKER McKEOWN. M. Parker McKeown, a well known farmer of Cedar township, where he has made his home for more than twenty years, was born in Des Moines county, Iowa, December 1, 1852.

He is a son of John and Annie (PARKER) McKeown, who came with their parents from Ireland to America in their childhood, living first in Ohio and later in Iowa. They were married in Des Moines county and there continued until their deaths. The father at one time was the owner of one hundred and eighty acres of land, all of which he divided among his children except forty acres that he owned at the time of his death. He was a man of many fine qualities and a great lover of his family. Of the eleven children comprising the home circle two died in infancy, the others being : Sarah, now of Mediapolis, Iowa ; James, who lives near Morning Sun, Iowa ; Mary, now deceased ; M. Parker, our subject ; John, who lives near Prairie City, Oklahoma ; Samantha, of Mediapolis ; Emma, of Burlington, Iowa ; Ira, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin ; and Albert, of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Reared on the home farm, M. Parker McKeown early became familiar with the labors of the field. He was educated in the country schools, gaining the foundation upon which he has been enabled to build successfully until he is now a man of good general information. He continued at home until twenty-one years of age and then worked for wages for a short time, after which he came to Conesville, Muscatine county, and purchased one hundred and eighty acres of land. There he lived until 1888, when he sold out and removed to Cedar township, acquiring fifty-seven acres, the nucleus of the well improved farm of two hundred and seventeen acres which he now owns. He is also the owner of property on East Hill, Muscatine, and his wife owns one hundred and sixty acres of good farming land in Orono township. By close attention to his business Mr. McKeown has attained a gratifying measure of success.

On the 12th of January, 1881, Mr. McKeown was united in marriage to Miss RHODA E. LORD, who was born in Muscatine county, May 7, 1851. She is a daughter of Richard and JANE SMALLEY Lord, the mother having been born in Ohio, October 27, 1822, and the father in Connecticut, January 10, 1809.
They were married in Iowa in 1840 and settled on a farm in Muscatine county, where Mr. Lord made his home for about forty years. He was called from earthly scenes in 1886, while his wife died in 1857. Of the nine children in their family, three are now living : Katie, of Conesville ; Rhoda E., now Mrs. McKeown ; and Richard J., of Nichols, Iowa . Those deceased are: Andrew, Albert, Edward, Byron, Manza, and Herman.

Two children came to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. McKeown :
    ADA R., born October 14, 1883 ; and
    ALBERT G., April 8, 1886.

Politically Mr. McKeown adheres to the republican party and heartily supports its principles. He has served with general acceptance as justice of the peace. He and his wife are affiliated with the United brethren church, being active workers in its behalf and also in worthy causes for the welfare of others. Mrs. McKeown is a graduate of the Muscatine high school and for nine years before her marriage taught school, becoming recognized as one of the thoroughly capable teachers of the county. She is a woman of many attractive qualities of mind and heart.

CONESVILLE MAYOR HELD FOR MURDER Accused of Shooting Dr. A. R. McKeown MUSCATINE, George Brown, 78, Conesville mayor, was charged with first degree murder Tuesday afternoon in the death of Dr. A. R. McKeown, 63, farm operator near Conesville. Deputy Sheriff L. G. Pace said McKeown told him in a statement before the retired physician was taken to a hospital that Brown had shot him. The information charging the mayor with murder was signed by Deputy Sheriff L. G. Pace. Brought before Justice of the Peace L. A. Crull, Brown waived preliminary hearing and was committed to the county jail without bond. A short time earlier Sheriff Fred B. Nesper said he and an agent of the Iowa bureau of in investigation were questioning Brown in connection with the death of the one-time Seattle Wash., physician whose brother served a term in the penitentiary for killing their mother.

Wounds Prove Fatal. Dr. McKeown died Tuesday morning in an Iowa City hospital of gunshot wounds in the back. The sheriff said the mayor admitted seeing the farm operator Monday, but denied any part in the incident. Following the death, State Agent Dwight Bender came here to assist in the investigation which the sheriff said was intensified immediately. Dr. McKeown was shot in the back Monday, apparently by a shotgun, as he was rounding up cattle on his farm, about 18 miles west of Muscatine. The horse he was riding brought him to his home. Mrs. Stuart Conklin, a neighbor, noticed the horse and rider and called other neighbors who notified the sheriff's office. The doctor was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, after giving Deputy Sheriff Pace a statement. Sheriff Nesper said Brown owns a farm near the McKeown place.

Leaves Practice For Farm. Dr. McKeown attended the University of Iowa medical college three years and finished his studies in Denver in 1910, members of the family said. He served as a major in the medical corps in World War I. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Priscilla of Mt Pleasant; his father, M. P. McKeown of Conesville, and a brother, Albert, of Muscatine County. A son, Lovelll, was killed in World War II. His wife and mother are dead. The- doctor's mother, Mrs. Rhoda Emma McKeown, then 82, was killed at Seattle in March, 1932, while on a visit at the home of another son, Dr. Albert G. McKeown, then 45, and a Seattle dentist. Her body was found in the basement of Albert's home. The dentist was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 12 to 25 years in prison. On the completion of his term he returned to Muscatine County, where his physician-brother already was residing. Since then both professional men have operated farms near each other in the Conesville vicinity. Council Bluffs (Iowa) Nonpareil - Wednesday, October 30, 1946

Ady McKeown roomed at Y.M.C.A. building and taught school south of this city last winter - shot at midnight -he will recover. Ady McKeown, who roomed at the Y.M.C.A. building and taught school south of this city last winter, was shot in the left leg between the knee and hip Monday near midnight at the St. Louis world's fair ticket gate. Mr. McKeown was ticket man and refused to let two men in on one pass. This made one of the ruffians so furious that after a wrangle he shot Mr. McKeown. The couple immediately fled after the shooting. Mr. McKeown was taken to the Emergency hospital within the fair grounds and later by his request to the Sanitarium in St. Louis where the bullet was extracted. Mrs. S. A. McKeown, his aunt, who is a trained nurse in Burlington, (Ia.) was telegraphed and arrived at his bedside as soon as a St. Louis bound train could take her there. News of the shooting was received Thursday by the wounded man's brother, Albert McKeown, who rooms at the Y.M.C.A. building and is employed by the Batterson Stores. His brother Albert says from the latest reports that he has received his condition was somewhat better and probably would recover. The two ruffians are not know or as yet report to have been caught.

Artillerymen were responsible for the shooting of Ady McKeown, a former Muscatine boy in St. Louis October 10, according to a letter received this morning. The account of the shooting was given in the Journal recently in which it was stated that Mr. McKeown was shot by robbers. Later advices indicate that abusive artillerymen who were determined to enter the world's fair grounds, where Mr. McKeown was a gate keeper, were responsible for his injury. The victim is recovering nicely.

Dentist confesses killing of aged mother.
Argument over money leads to brutal murder.
Reputed confession of son withheld while probe continues. By the Associated Press. Seattle, Wash. March 3.
Police announced late today that Dr. Albert G. McKeown had confessed he killed his 81-year-old mother, Mrs. Rhoda McKeown of Muscatine, Ia., with bare hands in a dispute over money.
    Dentist Admits Crime.
After two days of questioning, following discovery of the body of Mrs. McKeown in the basement of his home, the doctor broke down this morning, police said. He had been confronted with extensive evidence. “I killed her,” Sheriff Claude G. Bannick quoted him as saying after he had become quieted. Word of the reputed confession of the dentist was withheld by the prosecutor’s office while details of the case were investigated.
    Detective Found Will.
Detectives said they had found a will Mrs. McKeown had made three days before her death. In it, they added, she had revoked a previous will which left the bulk of her estate to Dr. McKeown and provided that he share it equally with an old brother, Dr. A. Royal McKeown, also of Seattle.
They added they learned the elderly woman had drafted new notes to make a $10,700 loan to Dr. Albert McKeown payable to her estate, instead of being cancelled, if she died. The new notes were unsigned.
After McKeown’s confession, Sheriff Bannick said he was allowed to go to bed and was wakened late today. The confession was not announced earlier, the sheriff added, to permit more evidence to be assembled.
    McKeown Makes Confession
Sheriff Bannick said Dr. McKeown “went to pieces, blew up and confessed.” In addition to the matters of the new will and the notes on his mother’s loan, cuts and abrasions on his left hand were evidence the officers queried him about, they said. The doctor had contended they were not cuts
    (continued on page twelve)
but merely burns accidently received from a flat iron.
During the early investigation of the death, the doctor’s wife was questioned and released after spending a night in jail and the elder brother, Dr. A. Royal McKeown, also was brought into the case.
    Affairs Readied Crisis
He had told Deputy Prosecutor Lenhan, the prosecutor said, of his irritation over the over the way in which his younger brother had obtained money from his mother and had said that affairs had reached a crisis between them on the day of her death. A portion of a blood-soaked piece of canvas and a piece of charred note was taken from the furnace of the dentist’s home after the mother was found dead. After explaining he had found her body in the basement, the dentist said he had covered her with the canvas and then threw it into the furnace, and substituted a blanket. His story to authorities was that he believed a marauder had slain her in the basement seeking $5,000 in bonds which he said she was accustomed to carry in her clothing.
Mrs. McKeown came west last December with her younger son from her home in Iowa.

Jury excused as state argues with defense over testimony about victim.
    By the Associated Press.
    Seattle, Wash. April 27.
The jury in the Dr. Albert G. McKeown murder trial was excused today when the state began a fight against defense efforts to show his mother, Mrs. Rhoda McKeown, 81, was mentally unbalanced. McKeown is charged with second degree murder as a result of a fatal beating given her in the cellar of his home here March 1.
Mrs. Martin Jacobson, a neighbor of the McKeowns, was testifying regarding the dead woman’s talk and actions when Prosecutor Robert M. Berrander interrupted with the statement “The first thing we know the defense will be striving to show the old lady deserved to die.”
“That is not true,” retorted Defense Attorney Henry Clay Agnew. Mrs. Jacobson quoted Mrs. McKeown as saying her sons were going to take her into a dark place to murder her. It developed, the witness said, they were taking their mother into a motion picture theater.
The jury was locked up when both sides began an argument on the admissibility of the testimony. The defense effort for force admission of the state’s copy of the dentist’s confession to the beating failed when the court ruled the state need not produce it.

    Dentist Takes Witness Stand.
Prosecution Confronts Defendant With Sheaf of Letters Written to Mother.
By The Associated Press, Seattle, Wash, May 2.
After being subjected to cross-examination throughout the day, Dr. Albert G. McKeown, Seattle dentist charged with second degree murder for the slaying of his mother, Mrs. Rhoda McKeown of Muscatine, Ia., late today was confronted with a sheaf of letters, he had written to his mother.
Altho the dentist had testified his mother begged him to bring her to Seattle so his brother, Dr. A. Royal McKeown, Seattle physician, could not have her committed to an insane asylum, he admitted authorship of letters, begging the woman to come here.
The dentist when questioned as to why he had attempted to implicate his brother in the killing said the brother “tried to implicate my dear wife.”
Dr. McKeown explained that when he sent for his physician brother after the tragedy he had expected solace and consolation.
Prosecutor Robert M. Burgunder replied with a letter which the dentist admitted writing to his mother in which he referred to the physician as a “thief, a murderer, and libertine.”

    C.R. voice falls silent
City Council-meeting regular Casten, 76, commits suicide
    By Rick Smith, The Gazette
Cedar Rapids – H.J. “Doc” Casten has been a regular citizen voice at City Council meetings and the kind of critic elected officials come to love.
A former truck drive and business agent for Teamsters Local No.238, he always sprinkled suggestions for better government with a good thing to say about the city and the council.
It was a dependable mix. Casten 76, never surprised.
    Until now.
After emergency colon surgery and the pain and discomfort that his wife said would not subside in the month following the surgery, the mild-mannered Casten killed himself at his home, 187 Carter St. NW.
His wife Shirley, said she had gone to the pharmacy May 22 to pick up some stomach medicine for him and found him dead when she returned.
Shirley Casten said her husband had insisted on no obituary, no funeral and no burial. He was cremated.
Mayor Paul Pate said this week that the suicide startled and saddened him and his council colleagues.
:He’s always been upbeat, uplifting,” Pate said. “He never complained about himself. He always had good things to say about the city.”
Shirley Casten said her husband began attending council meetings several years ago when he tired of people who would complain about City Hall but would never go there to voice an opinion. He decided he would.
Some probably thought Casten showed at the council gatherings – which are taped for telecast on the local cable station – so he could see himself on TV. But he couldn’t.
“We don’t have cable,” his wife said.
The respectful retiree sat apart from the handful of other citizen regulars who often speak at council meetings, and it was his stew of praise and suggestions that earned Casten credibility among council members, Pate said.
“He’d say, “This is one I think you missed, and I hope you do better the next time,’” the mayor said.
Casten was a strong advocate for veterans, public transportation and public safely and recently had been named to a City Hall task force to study the city’s police helicopter program.
This spring Casten suggested that the council delay more spending on bike trails so it could save some jabs slated for layoff at the Street Department.
In the past, he questioned why the council raised the bar from $5,000 to $10,000 on the size of city purchases that needed council review, saying, “Accountability, when you’re handling large sums of other people’s money, cannot be overdone.”
Casten had been known, too, to tell the council to be careful raising taxes and utility rates, saying the increase hit retirees hard.
“I don’t want to leave Cedar Rapids, but every time someone aims at my pocketbook, I have to look at a road map,” Casten said once.
Casten, who grew up in Morning Sun in Louisa County, was called “Doc” and not his given name, Herman. The nickname stuck after he returned from mechanic school as a young man with a doctor of mechanics certificate, his wife said.
Shirley Casten said she met her husband in the Kansas City area and they married a week later. They were married 51 years and had a son and daughter, she said.
After heart surgery a few years ago, he made a point to walking two miles every day in his neighborhood.
“Sometime it took him a while to get back here if he found somebody to talk to,” Shirley Casten said. “People said he always knew what was going on in the neighborhood.”
More than that, he made it a point to try to know what was going on in all of Cedar Rapids.
But he never hinted that he knew it all or that he ever would.
“He was a gentleman, “Pate said. “He was a breath of fresh air. He’s a voice we’re going to miss.

    Adele and Heath Guptill
    IN THE CARE OF

Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home & Cemetery

Adele M. Guptill was born in Leavenworth, Washington on April 21, 1920 to Albert and Anna (Grue) McKeown. She was the youngest of 3 siblings, the oldest being brother Forrest followed by second brother Gayle (Mac). When she was about 4 years old, the family moved to Bellingham where Albert ran Grue's Groceries by the waterfront. They later moved to Seattle.
Heath Reese Guptill was born in Seattle, Washington on June 1, 1917 to Forest Putnam Guptill and Lenore (Reese) Guptill. His sister Eugenia (Gene) was born about 10 years later.
Heath discovered from his grandfather, Nathaniel Heath Guptill (1855-1940), who married Carrie Orilla Putnam, that he is an ancestor to General Israel Putnam of Revolutionary War fame of the Battle of Bunker Hill ("don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes").
Heath and Adele attended Roosevelt High School in Seattle where they met while working on the "Stage Force" crew building sets for the theatre department. They also enjoyed singing in the choir. Adele and Heath also attended the University of Washington where Heath got a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1939. He also entered a Masters program before the start of WWII. Heath and Adele married on October 20, 1942 and lived briefly in Schenectady, New York where Heath had a job at GE, as well as the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC (working on the then secret radar project). They later moved back to the West coast where they had 2 sons. Summer vacations were often spent camping or visiting family in the Seattle area. In L.A. Heath worked at Hughes Aircraft until his retirement in 1973. Wanting to move back to the Northwest after raising their family in the LA area, they built their new home in Bothell, Washington in 1974 where they lived until March, 2008.
After retirement, Heath and Adele enjoyed a busy life and traveled to Norway, England, Ireland, Hawaii and cruised the Inland Passage to Alaska. Adele enjoyed bicycling and they were both long-time members of the Bothell Senior Center "Gourmet Bicycle" riding group. Adele would ride all over the King county area and after the rides, the group would meet for a hearty lunch. Heath would act as their "sag wagon", assist with repairs and "sweep" the course for people needing a ride back to the starting point. Heath also joined the Seattle Sail and Power Squadron to further safety education in small boat seamanship and navigation. They enjoyed a wonderful sail into Princess Louisa Inlet - a place he remembered going to when he was a Boy Scout. They both had a zest for life and enjoyed sailing and being out on the water in the Sound, as well as attending various plays, Civic Light Opera, and World Cavalcade travel presentations with friends.
They have 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. They used to rotate and "trade off" hosting Christmas gatherings either at their home in Bothell or at their son's homes in the LA area or in Oregon. Their out of state families would also come visit and enjoy the liberal policy on fireworks at the Fourth of July in Bothell.
Heath was a voracious reader and loved science fiction. He also enjoyed tinkering with electronic or wood projects in his garage workshop. He created various functional works of art and enjoyed being a "handyman" around the house. Adele worked briefly as an administrative assistant at UCLA and taught Sunday school. She was the consummate home-maker and hostess and tried numerous new healthful recipes on the family; many successful ones have been handed down to their children. Adele had a gigantic vegetable garden, growing fruits and vegetables for their table. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing and knitting, creating numerous functional outfits and pieces for her family.
They were still very much in love and devoted to each another after almost 69 years of marriage! At one point before giving up driving, Heath drove into Bothell to get a Mother's Day card for his bride - one of his last independent "errands".
In the last several years, Heath's health declined as a result of dementia and a stroke, but Adele was his constant companion and caretaker to the end - Heath called her "his angel". Heath passed away July 18, 2011 in Bothell. He was much loved by his family and friends who will miss his lively conversations and good company with him. In all, he was a compassionate, intelligent and ethical person throughout his life.
Adele always had a sparkle in her eyes and was loved and admired by her family as well as friends at her assisted living facility. Her family wondered where she got her strength and determination, but she passed away July 16, 2012 in Bothell, WA after battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was compassionate, loving, determined and righteous throughout her life. Their family and friends will miss them both very much.
May they rest in peace at Evergreen Washelli in Seattle, together again.
