    While Mrs. F. D. Letts was hurrying to the bedside of her father, David N. Haney, who is seriously ill at his home at Washington, Ia., Rep. F.D. Letts received a message announcing the death of his sister, Mrs. Emma Letts King, which occurred at her home in Berkley, Calif., early today.

    David Haney of Washington, boss of the bridge carpenters on the east for about 20 years, died at 2 o'clock Tuesday morning at Washington. He was aged 68 years. His wife survives. The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Christian Church at Washington.

    Mrs. F.D. Letts’ Sister Is Dead In Seattle, Wash.
    Mrs. Lena McKeown, sister of Mrs. F.D. Letts wife of Rep. F.D. Letts of Davenport, is dead at her home in Seattle, Wash., according to word reaching Davenport today.
    Mrs. McKeown was formerly Miss Lena Haney of Muscatine. Rep. and Mrs. Letts reached San Francisco yesterday aboard the army transport Chateau Thierry, on which a flue epidemic broke out enroute from New York. They had planned to go from San Francisco to Hawaii and the Philippines but instead will go to Seattle for the funeral, after which they expect to return to Davenport.

    Purple Heart Medal Awarded To Sgt. Sgt.
    Lovell Parker McKeown, grandson of M. P. McKeown and son of A. H. McKeown of Letts, route 1, has been awarded the Purple Heart medal posthumously, according to word received by the father.
    Sgt. McKeown was killed in action in the North American area on May 29, 1943, according to word received by the relatives
    on June 17 of this year.
    A letter received Friday by the McKeowns from Henry L. Stimson, secretary of war, "follows:
    "At the request of the president,
    I write to inform you that the Purple. Heart has been awarded posthumously to your son, Sgt. Lovell P. McKeown, infantry, who sacrificed his life in defense of his country.
    "Little that we can do or say will console, you for the death of your loved one. We profoundly appreciate the greatness of your loss, for in a very real sense the loss suffered by any of us in this battle for our country is a loss shared by all of us.
    "When the medal, which you will shortly receive, reaches vou. I want you. to know that with it goes my sincerest sympathy and the hope that time and the victory of our cause will finally lighten the burden of your grief."

    Sgt. Lovell Parker McKeown, grandson of M. P. McKeown of Mediapolis, killed in action May 29, 1943, on Attu in the Aleutians. Body returned for burial in September of this year.

    Sgt. McKeown is fatally injured in Army service.
    Sgt. Lovell Parker McKeown, grandson of M. P. McKeown of near Letts, was killed in action in the North American area on May 29, according to information received by Mr. McKeown from the war department. Sgt. McKeown was a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. McKeown of Seattle. He had visited his grandfather at different times and was known in this locality. Sgt. McKeown was serving with the infantry. No details of the action in which he met death were revealed.
