Mrs. Isaac Shields, living eight miles west of Perry, is very low and is not expected to live.

Daily Enterprise Times. Friday. 8 May 1903

Rev. Oglevee, formerly pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, now in charge of a pastorate at Stroud, O.T. arrived in the city this morning in answer to a telephone message from Mr. Isaac Shields, informing him of the death of his wife and a wish that he take charge of the funeral services. Mr. and Mrs. Shields were earnest members of Rev. Oglevee’s church during his pastorate of over six years in this city, and the christian love existing between pastor and member only grew stronger as the years passed by, and no wonder that the last request of this saintly woman should be that her old pastor come to comfort her loved ones as her spirit, freed from earthly fetters, winged its way through space to the Father’s house where all was in waiting for the redeemed soul.

    Obituary.
Margaret McCullom was born in County Antrim, Ireland, on April 4, 1836. She was married to Isaac Shields September 17, 1857. They came to America in 1860, and located in Baltimore, Md. From Baltimore, they moved to Iowa. They came to Oklahoma seven years ago and located near Perry. She peacefully passed out of the present on Saturday May 9, 1903. She leaves her beloved husband, five daughters and two sons and twenty-seven grand children to mourn her loss. All the children and fifteen of her grand children were present at the last.

Mrs. Shields united with the Presbyterian church at the age of eighteen. Her life was spent in the service of her Master. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Presbyterian church to the end. Her life stands as a grand testimony for rightousness. Twenty-two years ago her husband was afflicted with partial paralysis, and for two years she had to feed him with a spoon and all these years she has faithfully ministered unto his wants. She is now at rest with her Lord; we are sometimes in doubt whether or not our friends have made a good exchange of worlds, but in Margaret Shields there is no room for doubt.

The funeral services on Monday were conducted by Rev. J.A. B. Oglevee who had been her pastor for six years at Perry.
A large number of sympathizing friends attended these last sad rites.

Daily Enterprise Times. Tuesday, 12 May 1903

Hugh McCullum, a former resident of Arapahoe, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Peter Watson, Englewood, Colo., Wednesday morning of last week. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife three years ago, and the end was not unexpected. The body was brought to Arapahoe for interment, accompanied by Mrs. Watson. Deceased was a highly respected citizen of Arapahoe for a number of years, and wore the latter years of his life away caring for his wife, who was a hopeless invalid and bedfast eleven years. After her death he visited here and there with his children in the hope that a rest and change of scene and climate would bring back some of his former good health, but he gradually failed, his age being too great for recuperation.

    Notes:

    Died In His 60th Year
John Shields died Friday, April 17, 1925, at his home, 207 North Pearl street, Paola, in his 60th year, following an illness of about four years with anemia. Last summer, Mrs. Shields had a severe attack and his condition was considered serious at that time, however, he gained strength and was apparently better until about four weeks ago when he took the influenza and his body was in too weakened a condition to resist the malady. Born in Mediapolis, Iowa, December 23, 1864, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1886, and in 1893 moved to Indian Territory. On January 24th, 1894, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Law, at Lincoln, Nebraska, and they lived in the Territory for thirteen years. Later the family came to Miami county in 1906 and settled in Richland township where they lived for six years and then moved to West Valley township, where they lived until February, 1924, at which time they moved to Paola.
Mr. Shields is survived by his wife and five children – Velma, wife of George Dean, lived in Chicago, Illinois; Reamer L. Shields, of San Francisco, California; Byron Shields, on the home place in West Valley township; Elwood and Dorothy at home. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Jas. Tull, Arapahoe, Nebraska; Mrs. J.L. Kirkhart, of Lucian, Oklahoma; Mrs. Jennie Watson, Lucian, Oklahoma; Mrs. Elizabeth Woodside, Denver, Colo. and one brother, William Shields, of Perry, Oklahoma. Reamer, the son in San Francisco, was unable to attend the funeral as he was in a hospital where he had undergone an operation for appendicitis.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Daniels and interment was in the Paola cemetery.
To the world generally Mr. Shields was a man of high worth, but only to close friends was his true greatness known. The good wife, and the rest of the family, knew his excellence, of course, and so did those outside, who had the opportunity to know him intimately. With his hands he earned ground, and with his hands he made it a home; he married, reared children and gave them schooling, so that to-day they honor their parents, and brighten the name. Not much to do? Yes, more than the victor who taketh a city, more than the conqueror who enslaves and impoverishes, more than the rich who grind the poor. John Shields was an average American, the highest type to-day of the world’s manhood. – The Westenr Spirit. (Paola, Kansas).

The news of the death of Herbert S. An operation for a perforated ulcer of the stomach had been performed Friday previous, but peritonitis develop, proving fatal.
