Virginia ""Ginny"" Ann Grothe-Maxwell, 76, died peacefully at home on Friday, October 20, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at 7 p.m. at the Brooks Funeral Care, University Chapel in Clive, Iowa.
Ginny was born July 22, 1930 in Clinton, IA to Alma Marie Bergthold Beine and Joseph Beine. She was raised in Burlington where she attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. Ginny married William ""Bill"" J. Grothe, Jr. on September 30, 1950, who died June 23, 1992. She then married Calvin ""Charlie"" Maxwell on January 9, 2002.
Ginny worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, and then retired from US West in 1989. She enjoyed all mental games, playing poker, spending time on her acreage in southern Iowa and with family and friends. Ginny loved all animals, especially her dogs Charlee and Dolly, and supported the Humane Society of America. She also enjoyed gardening, yard work, camping, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was a life long fan of country western music and has always been an avid Cubbie fan.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Calvin C. Maxwell of Johnston; her children, Nan (Jim) Newell of Prairie City, Steve (Tracy) Grothe of Osceola, Don Grothe of Plano, TX, Kathy (Randy) Kladivo of Tower, MN, Angie Johnson of Des Moines and Linda (Jon) Darter of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren; sisters, Claire George of Littleton, CO and Doris Levins of Burlington; brother-in-law Bob (Mary) Grothe of Danville; her step-children, Pamela (Kim) Richardson, Cynthia (Vic) Suppan, Charles (Deb) Maxwell, Edward Maxwell, Christina (Brian) Reid and Kenneth Maxwell; as well as many nieces, nephews and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill and sisters, Charline Prall and Anita Meyers.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society of America.
