    • Dorothy E. Carter, 89, Topeka, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at a Topeka nursing home.

      Mrs. Carter taught school in Meriden and Carbondale High Schools and for Topeka Unified School District No. 501.

      She was born Nov. 3, 1909, at New York City. She came to the Midwest as a small child aboard the Orphan Train and she was reared in Lamar, Mo., by George and Gertrude Dix Newlin. She attended school in Lawrence and earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Kansas in 1931. Mrs. Carter was a member of the American Association of University Women and Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority.

      She married John C. Carter on June 17, 1934, in Lawrence. He died Dec. 31, 1987.

      Mrs. Carter also was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Yoho, March 1, 1988.

      Survivors include a son in-law, Max Yoho; three grandsons, Alex Yoho, Topeka, Stuart Yoho, Salina, and Nicholas Yoho, Lawrence; and six great-grandchildren.

      Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

      Mrs. Carter will lie in state after noon today at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
