Roy R. “Shag” Rhoades, 106, of Valley died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley.
He was born June 9, 1901, in Fremont to Frank and Alice (Johnson) Rhoades. He grew up in the sandhills of Nebraska where he attended school through the eighth grade. He spent much of his time caring for his mother and sister in their sod house. He married Florence Glasgow on Aug. 8, 1936. They raised their family in Waterloo and Valley. He worked in Chicago for a short time before going to work with the Nebraska Department of Roads, rising to foreman at the time of his retirement. He boarded horses and sold produce.
Survivors include: a son, Jim of Valley; two daughters, Mary (and husband, Henry) Dierks of St. Paul, Minn., and Sherrie (and husband, Ralph) Laudenbach of Minneapolis; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister.
The graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Prospect Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Ratcliff officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn
