| 104 | Alberta Forret Granger Albert M. Forret, 86, of Granger Manor died of a heart ailment Sunday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Booneville Cemetery in Booneville. Mrs. Forret was born in Lamoni and had lived in the Des Moines area most of her life. She was retired from Parker Brothers and was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. | 106 | Alfred Johnson Passes Away Alfred Johnson, for over three years a resident of Elsinore, passed away Saturday night, April 23, at his home after a short illness. Mr. Johnson was born January 11, 1836, and died at the age of 85 years, three months and twelve days. With his wife, he had resided in Montana for many years before coming to Elsinore, having had large property interests in that state. He is survived by his wife, Lucinda Johnson, and has a large number of other relatives and many friends who mourn his loss. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2;30 p.m. in the chapel of the Clark undertaking parlors, Rev. Avery G. Hunt reading the service. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery in Elsinore. Many beautiful flowers were massed in the chapel and many out of town relatives and friends joined with Mr. Johnson's home-town folk in paying their last respects to a good friend and neighbor. | 114 | Angler, 15, knifed, dies; probe slated The death of a 15-year-old Dayton boy who was stabbed during an argument with companions at a fishing lake northwest of Fairborn Saturday is under investigation by the Green County Sheriff’s department. Richard K. James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse F. James of 61 E. Parkwood Drive, died at Grandview Hospital at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. He was stabbed in the stomach with a fishing knife during an argument with a companion at the Rainbow Fishing Lake on Ohio 235 about 12:06 a.m. Saturday, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s office. Three companions of the victim, including a 15-yaer-old boy suspected of wielding the knife, will be questioned, according to sheriff’s deputies. She was born in Rockcastle County on September 7, 1917 the daughter of Benjamin Lester and Corda Mullins Ponder. She was a farmer and homemaker and was a member of the Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church. She is survived by: two sons, Bradley (Pan) Phillips of Centerville, OH, and Gary (Gail) Phillips of Dayton, OH; two daughters, Shirley Miller of New Castle, IN, and Ann (Doug) Ward of Dayton, OH; a sister, Anna Lee McDaniel of Mill Valley, CA; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. | 119 | Another shooting scrape. Former watchman of the Niles Tool Works runs wild. What is likely to prove a murder occurred on last Monday shortly after the noon hour at the Miami Hotel, North B street and Park avenue, when H. F. Farmer, a former watchman employed at the Niles Tool Works Company, shot two men, John Robinson and Matt Young. Bother wounded men were taken to Mercy Hospital. Young is said to be in a serious condition and is likely to die. Farmer is being held until the extent of the injuries of the two men is determined. Farmer was employed at the Niles Tool Works as watchman until two weeks ago at which time a number of the men employed as watchmen at the big plant were laid off, no doubt because it was thought that the near-molders might now be trusted not to hurt each other. | 125 | Argument ends in gun play Jack Robinson, proprietor of Miami Hotel, hit in hip, and Mat Young, tenant, has wound in abdomen - latter in serious condition - Hiram Farmer admits doing shooting and Claims self-defense. As a result of an argument in the rear room of the Miami Hotel, Park and B street, early this afternoon, Mat Young, tenant of that place, and Jack Robinson, proprietor of the Hotel are in care of physicians suffering from shot wounds, and Hiram Farmer, 813 Second Street, this city, is in custody of the police charged with shooting with intent to kill. Those who were in the hotel at the time of the shooting stated that the three men were in a rear room of the place but a short while when shots were heard. Immediate call for police brought Officer Addison to the place and Farmer was place under arrest. Robinson and Young were taken to the Mercy Hospital in the patrol ambulance; the former shot in the hip, a severe fracture being sustained, and Young shot in the abdomen. Investigation by police at the hotel indicated, police say, that at least three shots were fired, as one bullet was lodged in a partition of the wall. The shooting was, according to police, done with a 48-calibre revolver. After being taken to police headquarters, Farmer gave his name as H. F. Farmer, residence 813 Second street, and stated that he formerly was watchman. Officer Neidermann of the local force stated that Farmer was reluctant to talk. Neidermann stated Farmer said that he (Farmer) was in a rear room of the hotel and that Robinson and Young attacked him. Farmer claimed that one of the men fired a shot at him. Mercy hospital official stated that Young's condition is probably serious. Dr. Mark Millikin has charge of the patient. No information was given regarding the condition of Robinson. Tenants of the Miami Hotel failed to give any information regarding the shooting. Robinson has been proprietor of the hotel for some time and Young has been living there for three weeks. Detectives of the local department are working on the case. Later Farmer broke the silence which possessed him shortly after time of arrest and gave out the following statement regarding the affair in the police. He admits that he shot Young in self-defense but states he does not remember shooting Robinson. He claimed he merely stopped in the hotel as he was passing and claims that Young and Robinson started after him. He claims that Young drew a gun. Farmer showed a mark to the police on his coat where he claimed Young shot him. Farmer also had a cut on his face. He stated that Robinson hit him. He was born in Red Hill, KY on March 28, 1920 the son of Daniel Minitree and Mary Ann Mullins Ponder. He was a farmer, a KY Colonel and a member of Gilberts Creek Baptist Church in Garrard County, KY. Mr. Ponder is survived by two sons: Bill Frank Ponder of Stanford and Jeff and Kathy Ponder of Lexington and two daughters: Juddie and Ed Donaldson of Versailles and Jennifer Ponder of Victor, ID. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Dan Lewis, Kathy Lewis, Aubrey Donaldson, Austin Donaldson, Zelie Donaldson, Amy and Andrew Ginn, Logan Ponder, Emily Ponder, Carly Woken and Lily Wolken and two great grandchildren: Matthew Ginn and Meritt Ginn. | 136 | BAKER, MARY ANN "ANN" Of Tampa, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family June 20, 2015, at the age of 88. Also known as Mammie, Sissy, and Sal by her family and friends, Ann will be missed by her daughter, Brenda (Harry) Phillips; grandchildren, Ronnie Baker, Kasey (Bobby) Klem, James (Melissa) Pistole, Beth (Geoff) Ludwick, and Alex (Tena) Ludwick; as well as five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Baker; brother, Alfred "Buddy" Smith; sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Hamilton; son, John Michael Baker; daughter, Barbara Ludwick. She will be lovingly remembered by her children's spouses Harry, Lorraine, and Charles. Born November 8, 1926 to Alfred and Bonnie Smith, Ann's faith in the Lord was an anchor in her life. She loved music and taught her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to play the piano. She was an amazing baker, seamstress, gardener, and caregiver, who never stopped moving and loved shopping. A life long resident of Tampa, she married Harold Baker in 1945 and raised their three wonderful children in the house they built together next to her mother's and brother's homes. Her family was her life and her home will be remembered as the center of many holidays and birthdays, with cakes lovingly baked and decorated by Ann. Ann taught her family to be kind, forgiving, and resilient. She was a shining example of grace, strength, and positivity to the many who knew and loved her. A celebration of Ann's life is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, at Gonzalez Funeral Home. Visitation will begin 11 am, service at noon, followed by interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. | 137 | BALL Homer D. Passed on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at age 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rosa Ball and his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Ball. Homer is survived by a dear son, Raymond (Laurie) Ball and a cherished granddaughter, Emily Ball. He will be remembered by: sister-in-law Anna Ball; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of family, neighbors and friends. Before becoming a barber, Homer served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart and European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre medal and three Bronze Stars. She is also survived by her loving son Raymond and his wife Laurie and her cherished granddaughter, Emily, all of Boston. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born in Livingston, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Robert and the late Delia Sams. She moved to Cincinnati as a young adult and during WWII, she worked at Union Terminal supporting the war effort and was then happy to be a homemaker in their home of 57 years in Mount Healthy. Dorothy loved tending to her garden, sitting outside in the fresh air, visiting with the children who played on the street and making chili for Emily when she came to visit. | 142 | Beauty Queen. Not slain, verdict of coroner, ascribing Louisville death of Cincinnatian's kin to effects of fall. Miss Una Ponder, 26-year-old former Louisville beauty queen, who was found dying in her Louisville apartment by Greater Cincinnati relatives September 11, died of a "cerebral hemorrhage due to a fall in her home," the Jefferson County Coroner's office ruled yesterday. Miss Ponder died the day after she was found by a sister, Mrs. Charles Rhodus, 121 Latonia Terrace Homes, Covington, and a brother, Keith Ponder, 127 Garfield Pl. They went to Louisville after receiving a mysterious telephone call that Miss Ponder was "in trouble." Deputy Coroner Joseph Beck said that "the verdict is on the basis of information available at this time." Sgt. henry Riebel of the police homicide squad said that he still was investigating the possibility of homicide. When found the woman's body was covered in bruises and what appeared to be cigarette burns. Death by a sadistic killer was suspected at first. They returned to Minnie's home in Madison Co., KY within a couple weeks of wedding to continue raising Minnie's children. Ann, her father having died at the tender young age of 1, only knew Garland as "Dad." In fact, when referring to her childhood, if a person asks her about her father, she often forgets to mention John Madden and only refers to Garland Roberts. Minnie's children were the only children Garland knew as his own, as he was reportedly unable to have his own kids in a previous marriage. Mr. Clifford had moved to Hamilton County in 1948, and had lived at his present address in eastern White River Township for the pat 20 years. A farmer for most of his life, he was the son of James and Ella (Furnace) Lacey. In 1919 he married Cynthia Hensley, who survives. Also surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Houchins of Chesterfield, Mrs. Ella Everett of Cedar Hill, Mo., Mrs. Effie Coppess of Anderson, Mrs. Louise Stewart of Indianapolis, Mrs. Norma Matlock of Noblesville, Mrs. Opal Gist of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Delores Mosteller of Fishers; and two sons, Thurman and Roy, both of Arcadia.
